The Clarington Fire Safety House was on display at the event and kids were also invited to try on firefighting gear and meet Lucky, the fire department mascot. Student to Serve on Board of Education A grade eleven student who attends Courtice Secondary School has been chosen as the second student-trustee for The Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education. Shannon McPhee, who is 16 years old, was selected over four other candidates by students who are members of the board's student senate. The senate is composed of two students from the board's eight high schools as well as representatives from the adult learning centres. McPhee, who will take her seat at the board table in late August, is delighted with her new role. "I think it's really great that we have a student representing other students in the board and I want to represent students so they have a voice and can be heard." McPhee has served as a member of the student senate, is involved with the peer helping program at her high school, sits as a cabinet member of the Ontario Secondary School Students' Association and is a member of student council. "I love politics because it give you a say in what's going on around you and it gives you a means to represent other people," people," says McPhee who plans to establish e-mail links with members of the student senate to provide them with more information about the board and get feedback. She says there are "no issues that are outstanding for her" because she feels her job is to represent issues students bring forward. The Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education decided decided to add a student trustee last fall and Port Hope High School student Aaron McNair was selected by the student senate as the board's first student trustee. Each student's term is for a six month period. Board chairperson Bob WiUsher complimented McNair on his performance as a student trustee and says he looks forward to continuing involvement from students. Fewer than nine per cent of public school boards in the province have student trustees. * < \ * » Ji ¥ ..*■ Cl \ x Sr I..
