Saturday, June 21, 1997 Sonbon Homes Sweeps North Bay Tourney by Chris Rourke Staff Writer The Clarington Midget Sonbon Homes Orioles arc on a terrific roll after seven consecutive consecutive wins. The Orioles won two straight league games before they headed into the annual North Bay Baseball Association Midget Rep Tournament the first weekend in June. The team swept the North Bay tournament in four straight games, despite being without pitchers Steve Butterworth, who broke his leg in the first game, and Jamie McCarthy, out with a shoulder injury. They dedicated the tournament tournament to Butterworth and McCarthy. The Orioles opened the tournament with an 8-7 win over Sault Ste. Marie (game MVP Dave Yeatman). They. shutout Erindale 6-0 in their second game (game MVP Tom Kcrwin). In their third game they beat the host team, North Bay 9-5 (game MVP Darren Kok), before beating Sudbury 11-7 in the championship (game MVP John Line). They trailed 7-5 against Sudbury after five, but they scored six in the top of the sixth to lead 11-7 and Sudbury couldn't regroup. "It was a real team effort. We never lost our focus and our attitude was outstanding," manager Craig Butterworth said recently. "We never got dejected because we had a job of winning and that's what we did." The Orioles won their seventh in a row, 7-5. They arc now 5-2 in league play. London Knights (OHL) draft pick, Jason Lange got the start and pitched seven masterful innings giving up only two runs and six hits. Lange was also hot at the plate, as he went 3-3 with three RBIs. The Orioles scored five in the third to go up 5-0. Whitby cut the lead to three with two in the fourth, but the Orioles replied with two of their own in the fourth to lead 7-2. Lange was lifted after the seventh in favour of Scharrenweber, who pitched an inning-and-a-third, giving up three runs. Baksh came in to pitch the final two-thirds of the ninth to preserve the win and pick up the save. I NORTH BAY CHAMPS -- The Clarington Sonbon Homes midget Orioles travelled to North Bay during the first weekend in June and they came home as champions, beating Sudbury 11-7 in the championship game. Optimist Club Puts Up Good Challenge The Optimist Club of Newcastle Village sponsored Minor Bantam Orioles travelled to North Bay on the weekend of June 7 to test themselves in a tournament involving Major Bantam teams, rules and field dimensions. In game one against a bigger and stronger Major team from Georgetown, the Orioles dug in and refused to be intimidated. The guys scattered 16 hits and played fearless defence in support support of pitchers Adam Walton and Darren Lang, who were throwing from 60'6" as opposed to the 55' they are used to. Georgetown managed to get by us by a 9-8 score, and were glad to get out of there with that says manager Steve Spencer. Game two saw the Orioles defeat the Sudbury Majors 4-3, again on the strength of strong pitching, solid defence and a two run homer by Kyle Wipple in the fifth. Our guys were eliminated by Barrie which followed immediately after the Sudbury game. But they left the tourney with heads held high. MVP's as selected by opposing managers, game 1 - Chris Storey, 4 for 5 at plate, Game 2 - Adam Walton, great pitching effort, Game 3 - Darren Lang, gutsy all-round play.
