And one of the stops along the lour included a visit to the Bowmanville Zoo. "My daughter got started and 1 wanted to be with her. She began as a young girl in the Newcastle Brownies, advanced to the Girl Guides, then on to Pathfinders. And just last year, she travelled to England for a four-week Girl Guide jamboree that included 5,000 people from around the world. "Girl Guides build great self-esteem, and it offers a great opportunity opportunity for the girls to build camaraderie. It's just a fun group to be with," she said. In addition to the trip to the Bowmanville Zoo, the Ottawa group also visited the Hershey Factory in Smiths Falls, Reid Dairy in Belleville, Cullen Gardens in Whitby, and the CN Tower in Toronto. The group held barbecues, garage sales, decorated Easter eggs, and a list of other fundraisers in preparation for the trip. DURHAM BRIEFS Prisoners Get Back to Work on Ontario Highways Whitby Jail will be one of several correctional facilities across Ontario participating in the clean up of provincial roadways this summer as part of the Correctional Services Highway Enhancement Program. Prisoners volunteer to be part of the clean up, but only those who do not present a risk to the community are permitted to participate. Selected inmates will pick up litter, plant trees and per- l"orm other "beautification activities" along highways and median strips. Inmates from Whitby will be cleaning up sections of Hwy. 7 A east of Port Perry. Correctional Services Minister Bob Runciman said: "This project benefits the environment at nominal cost to taxpayers and supports tourism by contributing to a clean, attractive landscape, and gives offenders a chance to participate in a meaningful constructive outdoor activity as a way of giving something back to the community." Ajax, Pickering Set To Merge Transit and Fire Services GTA reformers, take note! The towns of Ajax and Pickering are trying to set an example. Both towns are preparing for a full merger of both public public transit and fire protection services. The merger was approved in principle in March. Now, a special committee has been proposed to take a closer look at issues surrounding the merger. At present, the transit systems systems of both towns cross over each other's borders to deliver deliver service to important facilities facilities such as the hospital and the Pickering Town Centre. Significant savings will be achieved by moving to one system, according to Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs. With respect to fire services, services, Mayor Arthurs says an expanded service area would mean more logical location of fire halls, and a single capital capital budget would allow more effective use of expensive equipment and training facilities. facilities. "The opportunity exists for the towns of Pickering and Ajax to lake a strong leadership role in demonstrating demonstrating to others how effective effective and cost-efficient service integration can occur between municipalities in a co-operative fashion," the Mayor writes in a press release.
