After hosting mosquito and peewee tournaments earlier this year, the major and minor bantam Oriole squads will be hosting hosting a tournament this Friday to Sunday (June 27-29) at Soper Creek Park. Both teams are confident heading into this weekend's tournament. tournament. "The team's competitive all the time," major bantam manager manager Tony Buckley told The Statesman recently. "Our defensive defensive play has been terrific." Buckley hopes his team can win two out of three in the preliminary preliminary round before Sunday's playoff round. The major bantams, who are sponsored by Dr. K. A. McPherson Optometrists and Canspar Fabrics, open up against Midland on Saturday morning. They play Welland later on Saturday before closing out the preliminary round on Sunday morning against West Hill. The minor bantams, sponsored by the Optimist Club of Newcastle Village, are managed by Steve Spencer. He admits his team could be tough. "You take your lumps in your minor year, but we're gearing towards our major year next year," Spencer said. "We're on "A" centre and the other teams here are AA or AAA".. The minor bantams open up against Whitby on Friday. They play East York and Scarborough Village in games two and three of the preliminary round, respectfully.
