Fiddle music by Bowmanville's Mike Sullivan and Friends will be featured. This concert is sponsored by Canada Trust. Admission is free. Listeners are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs to better enjoy the performance. And, since the concerts will be held rain or shine, an umbrella may be recommended. recommended. July 17th: The Jazz Cats Dixieland Band co-sponsored by Strike, Salmers and Clarington Artist Paints the Town Over the summer, Clarington is going to be seeing the name Carron Manning appearing in many locations. Now that the school year is wrapping up, this Courtice S.S. art teacher, who devotes ten months of the year to enlightening her students into the world of creativity, is busy making her creative dreams come true. By age eight, Manning was considered a professional artist with regular shows, both group and solo, at community areas such as the Markham Fair and public libraries. Encouraged to excel in her vocatidn, Manning graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Manning obtained her Associates Degree in Fine Arts, Painting and Drawing and spent- her 3rd of 4 years studying in Florence, Italy. She went on to get her Honours BA Fine Art, at the University of Guelph, and finally finally her Bachelor of Education at U of Toronto. Now at age 39, she has launched the creative minds of many students at Courtice S.S. "I believe that the kids of today" would be far better off if they spent more time "participating" with life than "observing" life through T.V. Their lives would be richer and our culture, would be richer," expresses Manning. "Kids are naturally born with creativity creativity but lose it. It is my job to rekindle this back into my students." For the summer months, Manning is planning a series of reductive reductive architectural watercolour paintings of the historical sites of downtown Bowmanville. "This project was inspired by my colleague Garth Gilpin," says Manning. Manning is also accepting students for the summer. She will accept serious teens and adults who want to learn watercolours, acrylics and basic drawing and composition. These classes will be taught in downtown Bowmanville at the Bowmanville Artists Co- Operative space, of which Manning is a keyholdér. For anyone looking to give a very special gift, Manning is accepting clients for commission work. You can meet with her at the Sun Aqua Festival every Saturday at the Port of Darlington Marina, to discuss private commissions. The Swing Shift big band brought to life favorite tunes by performers such as Glen Miller last Thursday, June 19th, in a concert at the Rotary Park. The event was co-sponsored by Ted Watson Farms Limited and Landmark Furniture. It attracted a crowd of over 200, who enjoyed a perfect summer evening of outdoor music. The next attraction in the summer concert series is this Thursday night, June 26, when fiddle music will be performed by Bowmanville's own Mark Sullivan and friends. The concert begins at 7 p.m., in Rotary Park at Queen and Temperance St,, iruBowmanville. Admission is free. Bring your own lawn chair. Canada Trust is the sponsor of the June 26 performance. August 7th: Bowmanville Legion Pipe Band, Sponsored by Morris Funeral Chapel Ltd. and Harrison (Esso) Fuels. August 14th: Concert Band of Cobourg, sponsored by Goodyear Canada's Bowmanville plant. August 21st: Country rock band, Chaser, sponsored by St. Marys Cement Co. August 28th: Wilmot Creek Chorus, sponsored by Martin Gerrits and Sons and The Kaitlin Group. Two students at Bowmanville High School submitted the winning entry in a competition to select the design for the next poster advertising the Terry Fox run. The work of Melissa Scott, a grade 12 student and Jake Davis, of grade 11, was chosen from about 500 entries Canada-wide. Both students are in the grade 11 applied design class. Sixteen entries were submitted from students students in the class as part of their course. About 6,000 copies of the poster will be produced.
