Page 24 The Clarington/Courlice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, June 28, 1997 Clarington Band Wins Silver at Cavalcade of Winds The third Cavalcade of Winds was held in Mel Lastman Square in the city of North York on Saturday, June 7, 1997. This annual event was organized by the Canadian Band Association and featured community bands from around the province. The Canadian Band Association with the Ontario chapter centred in the City of Toronto is the only organization which supports and promotes community community bands. The Ontario Chapter boasts a membership membership of over 200 members which includes many corporate corporate sponsors such as St. Johns Music, Harknett Music etc. As well 11 community community bands and several army reserve bands arc members. The Cavalcade of Winds event was designed solely for the promotion of community community bands. Each band was required to perform a programme not less than 30 minutes long. The Region of Durham was represented in a presentation presentation by Clarington's own concert band. The results were very pleasing. The band, under the direction of Barrie Hodgins and Albert Curtis, won a silver rating. As well, the band received a plaque for overall best deportment (stage presence) Hodgson Awards Contract To Support Firefighting Natural Resources Minister Chris Hodgson recently announced the awarding of two more private-sector contracts that will enhance and assist Ontario's firefighting efforts. MNR has awarded the Victorian Order of Nurses a $70,000 contract to provide front-line health and medical services at large fire sites. "Our firefighters are doing a tremendous job," said Mr. Hodgson. "We are doing all we can to improve their safety and comfort." Nurses are now working in the field to maintain confidential confidential medical records, supply medication, ensure compliance with Ontario health standards, provide critical incident counselling, counselling, and provide advice on all occupational and non-occu- pational health issues, MNR has also awarded contracts to four private companies" that will provide support services this year for base camps for large fires. The companies will provide all staff, equipment and services required for a fire base camp, including tents,- trailers for sleeping, office work, cooking, dining, shower and laundry facilities, food, water and portable electric power. "The awarding of these contracts to the private sector means improved health Care and base camp services for our firefighters," said Mr. Hodgson. "It also allows MNR forest firefighters to concentrate on fighting fires." for the day. AWARD WINNERS-- The Clarington Concert Band earned three awards earlier this month in the annual Cavalcade of Winds in North York. A plaid-shirted, banjo-playing senior citizen who has shared his music with patients at the Niagara General Hospitàl for years, is one of 21 Ontarians to be honoured this evening at the Senior Achievement Awards. When 70-year-old Donald Johnson brings his lively banjo playing and quick wit to the chronic care wing of the hospital, instant smiles and joy come to the faces of the patients. Mr. Johnson also finds the time to be an advocate for seniors' causes causes and to volunteer with the Red Cross, the Alzheimer Society and the Canadian Cancer Society. "It's inspiring to see people wit this kind of energy, devotion devotion to community, and commitment to helping others," said Cam. Jackson, Ontario's Minister Responsible for Seniors. "People of all ages benefit and learn from the contributions seniors have made, and continue to make to society." Minister Jackson and Lieutenant Governor Hilary Weston will recognize the recipients this evening at a ceremony ceremony in the Legislature building building at Queen's Park. Joining them at the ceremony will be Gordie Tapp, the honorary chair of Seniors' Month. The Senior Achievement Award was established in 1986 to recognize and honour outstanding outstanding s.ehiors who have made significant contributions to their communities during their senior years. About 250 seniors have been honoured over, the years for their contributions contributions in the areas of community community services, education, science, science, the arts, recreation, vol- unteerism, and humanitarian activities.
