Awards Open Photo Show at Visual Arts Centre The 14th Annual Photo Exhibition will remain on public view until July 18 The fourteenth annual Juried Photography Exhibition at the Visual Arts Centre opened with an awards ceremony on Sunday, June 23. A total of 131 entries were submitted for judging and twenty were selected to be part of this year's show. Juror Douglas Clark, an author and lecturer from Toronto, says the works chosen chosen demonstrate die two main functions of photography -- to show truth and provoke opinion. "The work on these walls - with clarity and invention - direct our thinking to each of these two impulses. In the very best work - and it is very good, indeed - these two roles of the photographic image exist together, inseparable, in balance." A good photograph demands that its viewer "dig through assorted memories, weave ever more complex stories and carefully consider the process of this act called 'opinion'", writes Clark in his juror's statement. Ten awards were presented at the opening on Sunday. The Best in Show prize went to Wayne Eardley of Millbrook for an untitled piece. The Best Color Award went to Blackstock artist Clint Griffin for his entry entitled Telephone Operator. Bowmanville photographer photographer Jean-Michael Komarnicki received the Best Black and White Award for one of his three photographs chosen for the show. A muted color photo of knitted caps earned Peggy deWitt of Picton the Mayor's Award. Awards of Excellence went to photographers from Toronto, Oshawa and Whitby. Honorary Mentions went to J. P. Tousignant of Orono for a self-portrait and to Dan Monchesky of Oshawa for his work, Paint Crew. The show remains on public public view until July 18.
