With abuse of this nature becoming more prevalent - or at least more out in the open - the question that enters all parents parents minds is: "How do we prevent prevent this from happening on our teams - and to our children?" children?" It's important to realize that abuse can include a whole range of behaviours including emotional (where your child is constantly belittled or called names by the coach) to physical physical (where your child is purposely purposely slapped, punched, kicked or made to do excessive exercises) to sexual (where your child is intentionally touched or forced to engage in sexual behaviour). Such forms of child abuse in sports generally generally take place when the leaders are not child-centred and are more concerned with winning and fulfilling their own needs, rather than fulfilling the needs of their players. Stay Alert...Stay Safe (SASS) - a registered Canadian charity which has been working working to keep children safe since 1987 - believes that parents must take responsibility for keeping all forms of abuse out of child sports. This responsibility responsibility starts with teaching your kids what signs to look for and empowering them with the skills they need - as well as your permission - to defend themselves. Keeping your kids safe from abuse begins with raising their self-esteem. The more positive an outlook children have about themselves and their abilities, the more equipped they are to defend themselves in any situation. situation. SASS, a national streetproofing streetproofing organization endorsed by the Association of Chiefs of Police funded by the Canadian Tire Child Protection Foundation offers these important important tips to help keep your kids safe in the world of sports: • Let your child take part in the decision to sign up fora sport. Never force him to play a sport that he doesn't want to play. • Get to know your child's coach. Take responsibility responsibility for teaching your child what team sports are all about and what to expect. Talk about the importance of rules, cooperating cooperating with others, fair play, winning and losing, and stand ing up for one's rights. • Give your child positive feedback - always. Focus on the positives as well as correcting correcting mistakes. • Acknowledge good intentions, intentions, effort and cooperation. • Encourage an open relationship relationship with your child - establish a "no secrets" rule. • Make sure your kids know that what they say to you or how they feel is always more important than the sport itself or the coaches involved.
