The Honourable Andre Ouellet, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Canada Post Corporation, today announced plans to issue a 45-cent stamp to honour the 500th anniversary anniversary of John Cabot's historic voyage to Canada. On June 24, both Canada Post and the Italian Postal Service will issue a stamp to mark this momentous momentous occasion. The stamps will officially be unveiled at ceremonies ceremonies in each country. In. addition, Canada Post Corporation will have T-shirts, sweatshirts, playing cards and rain ponchos for sale bearing the stamp's image. Giovanni Cabote was born in Genoa in the middle of the 15th century. His expertise in sailing and cartography led to his travelling the Mediterranean for years before re-settling with his family in Bristol, England, where he anglicized his name to John Cabot. There he petitioned King Henry VII for royal assent to explore new territories territories and possibly chart a new route to the Orient. On March 5, 1496, he received the King's approval in letters patent. In 1496, Cabot set sail from Bristol, but was forced to return due to had weather; food shortages and problems with the crew. On May 2, 1497, he set out again with- a crew of eighteen men on the 50-ton Matthew. On June 24, the Matthew landed somewhere along the east coast of Canada. Although many historians favour Bonavista, Newfoundland as the landing site, arguments have been made for other sites in Labrador, Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island. Believing he had landed in the Orient, Cabot returned to England to advise the King. The King awarded the explorer ten pounds and an annual pension pension of twenty pounds, and gave his assent for a second westward voyage. It is believed that Cabot did not return from this second voyage. Both the Canadian and Italian stamp use the same image, a design by Susan Warr iij MSS! i Ÿ6TACI « IMSHSf Ot CAI61 » !( ŸIAÎ519 II CÂ1CI8 ULAJLÂJLA IMIUUAAUI of Halifax, Nova Scotia, based on illustrations by Bonnie Ross and Ivan Murphy.
