Page 8 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, July 5, 1997 Beaver Lumber Tykes Collect 'A' Title at Awards Banquet At the recent CRHL Awards Day, the Beaver Lumber Minor Tyke team was officially crowned as the Minor Tyke "A" Champs. The season ended with Beaver Lumber edging past Orono in a tight race to take first place. The excitement carried into the playoffs with a dramatic opener, defeating Orono for the first time this season, then setting setting their sights on Computer Doctor, and Laing and McCarty, ending the 'A' round robin on top with three wins. Beaver Lumber defeated a determined Laing and McCarty team in an exciting exciting best-of-three championship, championship, coming back from behind to take the final game. Beaver Lumber had the lowest goals against average average in this nine team division, division, and all players on the team successfully contributed contributed to offensive scoring power. Mason Windows 86'ers Hit the Road for Games The Darlington-Mason Windows 86crs' went on the road for a pair of games in Central Soccer League action during thc past week. On June 18th, the team travelled to Whitby for a game with the host team Iroquois. Darlington would gain a first half lead when Trevor Delpippo re-directed a Devon Potter corner kick. Despite controlling . the play during much of the match, Darlington could not add to the score. Whitby would capitalize on a second half scramble to even things at 1-1. The score would stand up at the final whistle. Gemini Gymnasts Conclude Season On June 28-29, the Pre- Comp girls competed in the final competition of the season. The International Freedom Festival Invitational meet took place in Windsor, Ontario. Category 8B Renee Sparkes, of Courtice won the gold medal overall, placing 1st on vault, 2nd on bars, 1st on beam, and 1st on floor. Category 7A (group 1) Lorna Button, of Newcastle, won the gold medal overall, placing 1st on vault, 1st on bars, .1st on beam, and 2nd on floor. Category 7B Kira Locke, of Courtice, won the silver medal overall, placing 3rd on vault, 4th on bars, 1st on beam, and 2nd on floor. Category 6A Caitlin Patrick, of Bowmanville, won the silver medal overall, placing 3rd on vault, 3rd on bars, 1st on beam, and 6th on floor. On June 25, Darlington journeyed to North York to play the also undefeated Azzurri. Again the team would use clever playmaking through out much of the match to gain the advantage in play. An early goal from Derrck Van Heuvelen added to the 86ers' effort. Azzurri, however, would even the score late in the second half on a very questionable penalty shot decision by the referee. Keeper Steve Mills made a valiant effort to get his fingers to the ball, but it only just managed to trickle over the line. In the second half Darlington would again carry much of the play to their opponents. The 86crs took the lead on a Trevor Delpippo goal, after he scored on a great individual effort. Despite at least three breakaways, Darlington could not add to the lead. With the match entering added injury time, North York took advantage of a lucky bounce to lie the game 2-2. Although it would appear that the scoring touch may have deserted the team over the past two weeks, the team continues to bond and their efforts on the field definitely show this with their exciting play.
