i Page 6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 9, 1997 Darlington-Mason Windows 86ers' Rise lo First Place in CSL With 3-0 Victory Over Cobourg The Darlington-Mason Windows 86ers' travelled to Lions Park in Cobourg for a match with the home town Generals. Although the 86ers' would hold a large territorial advantage over Cobourg during the first half, poor finishing and strong defending by Cobourg would see the first half end scoreless. In the second half, the boys played with much more urgency. Numerous changes narrowly missed or crashed off of the goal frame. Finally, with eight minutes remaining, Devon Potter lept over the fallen Generals keeper to score the opening goal. Moments later a hard-charging Jeff Bouma saw his efforts rewarded for the second Darlington goal. A long looping shot by Ryan Fowler from the left wing side line finished the scoring scoring for the 3-0 victory. This win along with the surprising 2-1 win by Whitby over North York Azzuri has allowed Darlington to slip into first place in C.S.L. action. Outstanding performances were seen on defence by Justin Andrews and Scott Rietze who turned in strong games both defensively and on the counter attack, definitely made a difference difference in the results. The Mason Windows 86ers' would again like to thank Eric Kemp who filled in for vacationing players and turned in a strong performance. This week, the boys travelled to Peterborough where they would meet the Peterborough Lions II. This game proved to be one of our strongest and most successful team efforts of the season, with Darlington showing excellent pace and control from start to finish. Each player produced a better performance over their previous match, the 86ers' would earn a one sided 9-0 win. Mason Windows were led by Ryan Fowler and Brandon Kane with two goals each, while Adam Hobb, Derek Van Heuvelen, Trevor Delpippo, Brad Griffin and Scott Rietze each added singles. This match showed the potential that this team really has and what will be necessary to hold off second and third placed Pickering and North York in the race for the C.S.L. title. MYm Fkputknfbt by Telma R. Grant R.P.T. Golfers, Are You An Accident Waiting To Happen? QUESTION: Telma, since I have been playing golf I have had a lot of low back pain, wrist pain and sometimes some shoulder pain. If I take a break it is better, but during the summer I do not really likè to take a break from the golf game. How can physiotherapy help? Well are you? As I've touched on in previous articles, a lot of golfers have postural imbalances that will lead to injuries. injuries. To determine if you are a candidate, read through this list of signs. Right shoulder too low and twisted more forwards than the left side? Both shoulders tend to be rounded? Are the arms turned inward so the back of the hand is facing forward? Head and neck pulled to the right and angled forward of the chest and shoulders? Too much arching of the neck and lower back? The pelvis is tipped too far forwards? The knees are locked and the legs and feet are turned out too much to compensate for the knee being locked? Judging from this list of indicators, indicators, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the most common •injuries that result from attempting attempting to play golf with postural problems include neck, shoulder, shoulder, elbow, wrist and low back pain. If any one of these looks like you, beware: attempt to function at a high level despite postural breakdowns and you become an accident waiting to happen. Sooner or later an injury will occur. To answer the second part of your question, yes, a physiotherapist physiotherapist can help. We examine the whole body but attend to a client's posture specifically from the feet up. We assess the postural postural alignment of the whole body to determine how many of the postural faults described are present and problematic. The solution is to custom design a program specific to your postural needs. The exercises exercises that we give are not stretching exercises to ready your muscle prior to practising or playing golf. Instead the purpose purpose of the program is to return your body to its proper alignment. Remember that attempting to play golf with injuries and postural problems is like the car that always steers to the right. It causes a lot of wear and tear on the tires and it does not perform well, if you have any of these injuries above, come and get a specific golf analysis from your physiotherapist and see how we can help you. Rickard Recreation Complex played host to the 1997 Canadian Masters Lacrosse Championships. Brooklin Arena was also used for games. Seen here is action between the host, Whitby Masters and the Mississauga Tomahawks. The tournament ran from August 1-3. Masters Lacrosse Championships Badgers Gain Split in League Play The local Bowmanville Badgers Midget Women's fastball team split their two North York Women's Fastball League games this past week. The Badgers were upset at home by the visiting Newmarket Stingers by a 4 to 2 count. The hometown team started slowly to say the least, surrendering all four Newmarket runs in the first inning. A combination of poor defence, two bases on balls and a pair of timely Newmarket hits spelled big trouble in the Badgers' downfall. Bowmanville's pitcher Pernille Petersen settled down after the first inning and blanked the Stingers the rest of the game. Petersen went the distance, giving up just five hits, three walks and striking out six Newmarket hitters. Unfortunately, for the Badgers' hitters it was a night of stranding 10 baserunners as the Bowmanville club failed to deliver the key hit at the right time. The only bright spot offensively offensively for the Badgers featured a two-run home run by third baseman Katy Deighan following a double by first baseman Stacey Rout in the bottom half of the first inning. The Badgers collected only 4 hits in total with Rout collecting a double and a single, Deighan a home run and catcher Martina Hare a single. single. In the second game of the week the Badgers trounced the hometown Pickering Midget team by a convincing .18 to 5 score in league play. Pernille Petersen was the winning Badgers' pitcher with a complete game 6 hitter while striking out 6 Pickering batters. Contrary to the previous night's game, the Bowmanville "Cam Fella" at Kawartha Downs batters were alive and well, scoring early and often banging out a total of 14 hits with each Badgers' starter picking up at. least 1 hit. Leading the Badgers' hit parade was Stacey Rout who enjoyed a fine game at the plate picking up 3 hits including a double while driving in four Badgers' runs. Also contributing in a big way offensively was catcher Jen Cowan with a double and a single and 3 RBI's. Shortstop Amy Lywak got in on the explosion with 2 hits including a double. Petersen helped her own cause by delivering a triple and single and 3 RBI's,while outfielder Martina Hare also chipped in with 2 hits. Outfielder Brie Taylor showed her power by drilling a homerun and three runs batted in, while centrefielder Kate Tait tripled and drove in.two runs. Lynsey Moss singled and drove in two runs while filling in admirably at second base defensively. Katy Deighan rounded out the Badgers' attack, singling and driving in a run. The Badgers are presently preparing for the upcoming Provincial Qualifying Tournament in Napanee August 8th to the 10th. Kawartha Downs introduced introduced the greatest Standardbred race horse of all times, "Cam Fella", to the crowd on Thursday, August 7. Post Time was 7:30 p.m. Cam Fella led the Post Parade for the First Race and throughout the evening racing racing fans were able to get a close-up view of the Great One. The public was also invited invited to have their picture taken with Cam Fella for $3.00. All proceeds were donated to the Jennifer Ashley Foundation and Crohns and Colitis Foundations and also the Harness Horse Youth Foundation. The first 400 paying customers customers received a free poster of Cam Fella. N ♦ ROSSLAND hi O o 2 □ NOS. m ADELAIDE DC HWY. 401 ©j.p. 328 Ritson Rd.
