August 27. 1997 Pane 9 News from Newcastle by Hazel and Jack Crago Last Monday, August 18th, over 60 area senior citizens met at the Newcastle Funeral Home for coffee and sweets before a bus trip to Quinton house, Kirby Road. Compliments of Carl Good, cream tea luncheon was served at the beautiful Bed and Breakfast grounds of the Goacher home. Ideal weather allowed the seniors to tour the grounds at leisure. The visitors basked in the rural setting by the Ganaraska, and saw the prizewinning prizewinning Chows. A tour of the beautiful home where dinner murder mysteries take place was also on the agenda before the bus (with tour guide Gloria Gordon) departed. Among the persons who enjoyed this treat were Etta Fogarty and her sister Margo Currie, of Wilmot Creek. Etta, from Sydney, Nova Scotia, is holidaying for a couple of weeks with Margo and husband husband Neil. Petty Officer 1st Class Larry Perrin with sons Lee, 19 and James 17, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is visiting his parents Jack and Eleanor Perrin and grandfather Herman. On June 17, 1997, Larry, accompanied by wife Yvonne, was presented with a Somalia medal by His Excellency Rt, Hon. Romeo Leblanc at the Canada Reception Centre, 11 Hangar Uplands. On July 9, 1997 Larry, received a NATO medal for service in former Yugoslavia March 27, 1995 to May 5, 1995 and January 27 to June 14, 1994. Both medals were received while serving on HMCS Preserver. Congratulations Larry and belated August 17 birthday wishes. Due to the inclement weather of Thursday, the seniors' barbecue was cancelled. cancelled. Congratulations to Mrs. Theresa Martin who observed her 90th birthday on Monday, August 25th. On August 17th her family had a party at Strathaven where Theresa resides. In attendance were Joyce Bingham, Toronto and her two grandchildren Candace ,... and, ..Andniw Kukulewich, of Richmond Hill. Lloyd and Betty Martin of Manotick, Doris Harvey, Sarah and Lisa of Stouffville, Alec and Marilyn Martin, of Newcastle, their sons and families, families, Tom and Karen, Kevin, Rachel, Richard and Ian, Dpn and Irene, Michael and Shawn of Oshawa, Greg and Lynda and Emily of Courtice, Lloyd and Betty's son David and wife Sylvie, Wesley and Robert of Ottawa and from Morrisburg their daughter Shelley. Mrs. Martin received , congratulations from the federal federal and provincial governments governments and from Mr. O'Toole. The Martins also attended the Martin family reunion in Orono on August 17. Mrs. Eileen Allin returned recently from a month's vacation vacation in the western provinces where her sisters and brothers reside. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crago accompanied Leland and Fern Crago of Bowmanville to Peterborough on Saturday, August 23, when they attended attended the Legon Bell wedding at Trinity United Church. Reception followed at Lakefield Legion Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell attended the twenty- fifth wedding anniversary reception in honour of Vcrn and June Heard. This happy event took place at Orono United Church, on Saturday, August 23. Sunday visitors with Stan and Kay Powell were Judy Powell and Lynn Pigott, Oshawa. On Saturday evening Miss Karen Skelding of Port Perry visited her grandmother Elizabeth Skelding. Sunday visitors were her parents, Jack and Nan. Wednesday luncheon guests of Kathleen Kimball were Hugh and Meda Stapleton of Port Hope. Hugh now resides at Regency Manor. Time flies! Miss Krista Rumbles of Norwood, granddaughter granddaughter of Wilda Johnson Williams is registering at Ryerson, Toronto, to further her education. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Murray and Colleen, of Frankford, were weekend visitors with Arthur Bed win and Fred, Lake Shore. On Saturday, Mrs. Hilda Call attended Blackstock Fair. Sunday afternoon visitors with Hilda Call were son Keith and friend Debora and her aunt and son Jacob, of Bowmanville. Sunday supper guests were Cory and Marilyn Call and daughters Ashley and Morgan, of Blackstock. Sunday afternoon and evening visitors with Mrs. Lena Graham were son Fred and his daughter, Jessica. Fred has just returned from General Council in Alberta. Sunday luncheon guests of Jean and Brenlon Rickard were daughter Bev Elaschuk and son Danny, of Oshawa, Joel and Keegan Rickard. On Sunday afternoon the Rickards attended Open House at the Avicarc centre, Bowmanville, and motored on to Peterborough to visit Eric Johnson. Thursday luncheon guests of Myrtle Alldred were granddaughters granddaughters Robin and Erin Alldred, Bowmanville. How sad to hear of the destruction of Downsview United Church. This one hundred hundred and sixty-six year old building housed a great deal of history of Downsview. Sister Maurice Coulter is greatly saddened. Horticulture News On Tuesday, August 19, the Newcastle Horticultural Society held its annual flower and vegetable show at the Newcastle.Community Hall. Despite the dry weather, exhibitors were able to exhibit 195 entries in the senior show. Marilyn Curson, judge, chose Margery Freethy's Bountiful Basket, a mantel design as best decorative. Judge's choice in the show was Francis Jose's lily. Lorna Atkins, with 74 points, was again presented with the Elmhurst Silver Cup. Runner-up was Hazel Crago with 68 points and in third place was Shelley Etmanskie with 55 points. Janet Pacden showed the sweepstake aster; Lorna Atkins dahlia; Erla Jose gladiolus; Jean Rickard rose; and Vicki Lesnick zinnia. Persons graciously allowing allowing visitors to tour their gardens gardens were: Mr. and Mrs. Sierd De Jong, Mrs. Bertha Fisher, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jose, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Libby, Mrs. Janet Paeden and Mr. and Mrs. Denis Schmiegelow. In the evening Penny Leddy, secretary, presented prizes to the junior exhibitors who were Colin Van Niejenhuis, Justin Van Niejenhuis, Sarah Jansma, Allison Brogan, Montana Dcy, Katie Jansma, Erin Jansma and Zachary Jansma. For earning earning most points in the junior show Colin Van Niejenhuis was presented with the Lions plaque and a book. Congratulations to all the juniors who made posters, planted gardens, and exhibited in the show. News from St. George's At Sunday's service of morning prayer the Reverend Ann Tottenham preached about putting on "the whole armour of God". Flowers at the altar were given by Jackie and Everett Lake in memory of their parents and loved ones. The latest issue of the parish newsletter, "The Grapevine" was distributed and the coffee hour was hosted by June and John Hunter. United Church On Sunday, August 24th, 1997 at Newcastle United Church, a male quartet with a guitarist, pianist and drummer presented a great programme of southern gospel music. Cornerstone is the title by which this group is known. Bagpipes were played for the rendition of Amazing Grace. The whole presentation was a moving experience. East Clarington Food Bank must be relocated and food stuffs are needed. On September 14, the Vacation Bible School musical, musical, Kids in Action, will be presented.
