August 27, 1997 Avicare Bird Centre Welcomes Public lo Open House by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer Over 400 people attended an Open House at the Avicare Bird Rehabilitation Centre north of Bowmanville Sunday, August 24. By the end of the day, the donation jar at the end of the driveway was crammed with bills and coins totalling over $1,600. Centre staff were very happy to bring in such a large amount in a single day. Avicare relics heavily on individual donations to keep running. However, this past summer, government funds were available to hire five students. And there was no shortage of work to keep them busy. Their tasks ranged from feeding feeding and medicating patients to cleaning cages and responding responding to emergency calls. Nancy Metcalf, one of the five summer staff, says many of- the visitors on Saturday had dropped off injured birds in the past. Others were loyal financial supporters who welcomed welcomed the chance to take a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities. In a typical year, as many as 700 birds can be treated and allowed to recover in the various indoor and outdoor pens. They'll take on everything from endangered falcons and water fowl to the most common common songbirds like robins, bluejays and mourning doves. Avicare was founded nine years ago by Hilary and Ofer Pittel. One of their main goals is to reduce the number of casualties casualties through education. Domestic cats, cars, reflective windows and fishing gear are some of the common dangers for birds. Saturday's Open House featured displays encouraging cat-owners to keep pets indoors (especially during dawn and dusk) or attach bells and fluorescent tags on their collars. Anglers can do their bit by switching from lead weights to ceramic. Avicare volunteers arc happy to provide information and guidance over the phone. Also al llie Open House on Saturday were bird handlers from Raptor Rhapsody, a firm that puts its birds of prey into service at airports to scare away flocks of seagulls. Falconer Laine Davidson says a gull sucked into a aircraft aircraft engine can have fatal consequences for crew and passengers. A chronic bird problem can also cost an airline airline millions in repair bills. Recently, Davidson and his Peregrine, Rebel, were put to work at a subdivision west of Toronto to control a population population of over 10,000 starlings that were "driving residents crazy." "The noise can be deafening," deafening," Davidson said. Just the sight of a Peregrine falcon, he says, can frighten the flocks away. "The birds arc faster than cheetahs," lie adds. "They can come screeching out of the sky at 200 miles per hour." Avicare is licenced by the Canadian Wildlife Service. Case records are kept on .admitted birds and computerized computerized records arc submitted yearly, detailing the efforts of the Centre. Avicare is also licenced to band birds as they arc released, so more can be known about the fate of individual individual birds after their stay at the Centre.
