The excellent parade was led by the Durham Region Police Pipes and Drums Band. In keeping with the theme of the Fabulous Fifties, Neil Malcolm who was President of the Blackstock Agricultural Society in 1952-53 officially opened the 1997 Blackstock Fair. He and his wife Noreen rode in the parade in a rumble seal of the restored antique roadster car driven and owned by Jim and Chris Grieve. During the day the draws were made for the prizes in the raffle conducted by the Homecraft section of the Fair as a fundraiser towards the rebuilding of the grandstand. The beautiful quilt was won by Gail Wakeham of Oshawa, the Avon Gift package was won by Mary Williamson of Prince Albert and the Stitchery kit by Barb Byers of Blackstock. The annual beef barbecue at the United Church was a success with many enjoying the delicious dinner. The day concluded with a large number enjoying the dance to wind up this year's fair. - One of the directors who worked hard all day at the fair was Jodie Duff. On Saturday evening, Jodie went to the hospital where she gave birth to a baby girl. Congratulations, Jodie and Chris. That is what you call dedication to the Fair! The many rains that other areas have been receiving still manage to skirt around our community. Total rainfall here is just a little over an inch but even that has done wonders to the pastures, the lawns and the gardens. Others have reported three or four times that much moisture. Lorenza McArthur, a former former Blackstock resident, and now living at Riverview Manor, in Peterborough, celebrates celebrates her 90lh birthday on Wednesday, August 27. Lorenza was a resident of Blackstock for 60 years. Although in failing health, she enjoyed a birthday luncheon with relatives from Stratford on Tuesday, August 12 and a barbecue with a small group of relatives and friends on Saturday, August 23. Another small group of relatives will honour her on August 27 with an afternoon lea at the manor. During August, Lorenza has been amazed and pleased, since she has been absent from the community for seven and a half years, that friends from Blackstock and community have remembered her with their visits, cards and letters. Happy birthday greetings, Mrs. McArthur. On Sunday, Helen Dorrell, along with her friend Eunice Rodman of Little Britain, was surprised with a birthday party attended by family members and close friends and held in Lindsay. Helen and Eunice were close friends at Blackstock High School and share birthdays within three days of each other. They also share many of the same friends as well as two grandchildren grandchildren (children of Wilson and Melody (Dorrell) Rodman). Those from Blackstock who enjoyed the birthday party were Helen and Stuart Dorrell, Eileen McLaughlin, Wilma and Keith VanCamp, Richard and Ruby VanCamp and Gerald and Joyce Kelly. Happy birthday, Eunice and Helen. FROM Call (905) 721-1300 CHOICE OF/ PREMiERREALTYITD jÇjjj" 15 Albert Street, Unil 4, Oshawa, ON U H 4P7 Do not pay excessive commission. The participants participants in the 80, 100 and 160 used Blackstock as a check point so we saw many, many cyclists in the area. It certainly was a beautiful day for the event. There were 11 tables at the weekly card party with the following following winners - Ruby Birkett, Marie Gibson, Audrey Mahaffy, Tom Manns, Grant Bright, Reid Harness and Kathleen Watts. Lucky draw winners were Kathleen Watts, Wilma VanCamp, Bert Walts, Pearl Moore, Marie Gibson and Minnie Martin. St. John's by Colin Beal Blackstock Fair is not a new experience for most of the folk at St. John's but operating operating a refreshment booth at the Fair was something very new for all those who volunteered volunteered to cook and serve in St. John's first venture at running such a booth. Now we have a lot of experience experience at catering and St. John's sit-down spreads are famous. However! serving up hot-dogs and ice-cream bars and donuts and butter tarts, not to mention coffee and pop, when faced with a line-up of hungry customers was a new and different challenge. But it was all great fun and the customers seemed to enjoy it because they kept us busy all day. We learned a few things about this type of operation operation too. Special thanks to Charlotte Rutherford, Lorna Edgerton and Anne Carmichael for their hard work in arranging for our operation of the booth, for planning, and for assembling the equipment and the food. Thanks also to those members members of the congregation (including Father Hugh and Peggy) who took turns at serving, serving, and a special thanks to Jupiter Pluvius for the occasional occasional downpour which did help business at our indoor location. We realize that a lot of fair- goers probably didn't see the rain in the same light but it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good!
