Seniors Enjoy Outing to Kirby Newcastle Funeral, Home hosted over 60 seniors from Wilmot Creek, Newcastle, Newtonville, Orono, and Elizabethvillc at its first annual August Outing. The 24 hour course will be held at the Hospice Durham offices, 850 Champlain Avenue, Oshawa (North American Van Lines building), building), four consecutive Wednesdays beginning September 17 through October 8, 1997. The course will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Topics covered are: Communication Skills, Emotional Support and Family Dynamics, Transfer Techniques and Physical Considerations,, Multiculturalism and Burial Rites, Grief . and Bereavement, and Role of the volunteer. Hospice Durham is a free community based volunteer program that provides in- home support to individuals and families facing a life- threatening illness. Volunteers help hospice families by providing companionship companionship and emotional support and assist with nonmedical nonmedical tasks. Women's Institutes Promote Drug Information Program The Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) announces that it will partner with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Canada (PMAC) in a consumer health education program designed to address the inappropriate use of medications. Called Knowledge is the best medicine. this health education program will educate members and the general public about the responsible use of prescription medicines. The program includes a resource kit and planning guide to assist community groups in organizing workshops where health care professionals can work one-on-one with patients. FWIO feels this is an important initiative to improve health care. Research has shown that approximately 50 per cent of prescription prescription drug users do not take their medicines properly - either patients don't take their medicines at all or they don't take them according to the directions.
