Vintage Tractors Vie for Slow Moving Vehicle Title Unlike the high octane competition at nearby Mosport, there's an event at the Orono Fair for machines that don't aim to be the fastest. As part of the Heritage Farm Show at the Orono Fair, you can see a competition to determine the slowest of the vintage tractors on display. In a reversal of traditional racing concepts, the slowest machine across the finish line is declared the winner. The catch is that the slowest machine isn't allowed to come to a complete stop. Look for the vintage equipment show on the infield of the Orono Fair racetrack. Dollar$ & Sense with Deborah Kohlsmith Financial Consultant « Don't Take a Pay Gut after You Retire !" Interest rates are at a 40 year low. That's good news for first- lime home buyers. But if you're a retiree, the news couldn't be worse - especially if your retirement income is primarily in "safe" fixed-income investments, In the 1980s, with interest rates at II percent, putting your money into GICs, term deposits and savings accounts was safe and lucrative. Chances are, your retirement will last 20 or 30 years - which means you have time on your side to continue growing a retirement fund. An alternative to fixed investments is an equity mutual fund based Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP), which allows regtdar income withdrawals at a lax rate that's potentially more favorable than that on straight interest income. With an equity mutual fund SWP, you should have the long-term growth potential required to maintain your principal, keep ahead of inflation and even grow your investment - all while receiving a regular income. Mutual fund units aren't insured under the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation Act, and their unit values can fluctuate. But over the long-term, equities have outperformed all other forms of investments. If you expect your retirement to last for some time, you probably can't afford to ignore what an equity mutual fund SWP offers. Otherwise, you could run out of money before you run out of a need for it. Watch for next month's topic - "Time Really is More Valuable than Money". Topic suggestions are always welcome!
