Pickering Councillors See Red Over Hydro's Waste Oil Dump Pickering Regional Councillors Maurice Brenner and Doug Dickerson, say they are infuriated with the latest admission by Ontario Hydro that all is not well at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (PNGS). A report released August 27 by Hydro Chairman William Farlinger reveals that as much as 40,000 gallons (180,000 litres) of liquid waste oil was illegally dumped into a special special landfill site at the nuclear plant during construction of the "B" side, which contains four nuclear reactors remaining remaining on line, between 1977 and 1982. Farlinger stated, "1 have asked that no expense be spared to remediate this site" and the two Pickering Councillors intend to hold his feet to the hot coals on that promise. Councillor Dickerson, whose Ward Two contains the nuclear plant and landfill site, is upset that the press release from Hydro does not spell out exactly what kind of liquid industrial oil was illegally dumped into the site. Dickerson, who was Regional Councillor for the Ward between 1978- Î 980, recalls that during this period Ontario Hydro was replacing thousands of transformers across the Province and is concerned that some, or all, of the dumped oil may have come from some of these transformers.
