After all, she's been sleeping in a dorm for most of the summer. McKelvie, an Orono resident, was a member of Ontario's Women's Volleyball team that took part in the Canada Summer Games in August. She spent a good part of the summer at the University, where . she trained with her team. "We stayed at residence or in a hotel all summer. Only once this summer did I sleep by myself," says McKelvie, who wound up sharing a room with teammates throughout the season. The Ontario team started out four years ago with 1,000 of the province's top players. Numerous rounds of cuts got the team down to a more manageable 12, and McKelvie was skilled enough to be among the final cut. Team Ontario placed fourth in the tournament. Playing with Team Ontario meant sacrificing a summer's work and earnings for McKelvie, one of two kids in her family heading into post- secondary education this fall. But she says her parents have really come through for her, generously offering to help out with her school costs. "It was something they knew I'd always wanted to do," she says, gratefully. A recent graduate of Clarke High School, McKelvie attributes her high school's volleyball success to good coaching and excellent role models. As well, she says having a competitive team outside of school, the Ganaraska Wolves, had a major impact on the level of play. "It was the new and cool team to be involved with," remembers McKelvie, adding that after many years of success, Clarke may find itself in the team building process this season, having lost a number of key players on both the men's and women's teams. Another thing McKelvie won't have to adjust to in Ottawa is coaching. coaching. Her national team coach is also the coach at her chosen university. As a recruited player for the University, they'll hold a spot for her on the team, but she'll "have to secure it when I show up." Although she's received interest from American schools since about Grade 11, McKelvie says' it never really crossed her mind to accept a scholarship. "I feel so much more secure with players and coaches I know. I'm going there to get an education, but I know the volleyball will be what I expect it to be," says McKelvie, who will study Human Kinetics. Playing at the Canada Games brought an entirely new experience to McKelvie -- playing in front of The Sports Network's cameras. While playing, she really didn't notice the 12 cameras capturing the game. But time-outs were a different matter. "It was sort of frustrating. The camera was right in your face. You sort of felt like you were being invaded," says McKelvie, admitting, though, that the "coverage was awesome." awesome."
