The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 3, 1997 Section Two Pa g e7 Come to the Fair Durham Central Agricultural Society 145th Annual Fair, September 47 Orono Fair Board Announces Changes for Opening Day When the Durham Central Fair opens its gates for the 1997 edition, patrons will get a pleasant surprise. Thursday, September 4, will be Looney- Tooney Day, a day where almost everything can be purchased purchased for one or two dollars, or in some cases, for free. The first thing you will notice is that kids and grandparents grandparents will get into the grounds for free. Mom and Dad will pay only two bucks each and it will cost only one loonie to park the car. It might be a good idea to come early to get a good seat for the parade which will arrive around 6:30 and there will be free entertainment entertainment while your wait. If the parade doesn't inter est you, then there is the fair pageant or the dairy cattle show. The official opening of the 1997 fair will take place after the arrival of the parade and will be performed by Brenda Metcalf. Brenda is the District President of the Women's Institute, a rural organization of women celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of Women's Institutes in Ontario. Following the opening festivities, festivities, other events taking place in front of the grandstand grandstand will include the media- politician milking contest with a new twist this year. Also, there's the ever popular Farmers' Olympics where teams perform a series of maneuvers requiring dexterity and teamwork to finish the course in the shortest time. At any rate, the kids will be having a whale of a time down on the midway where almost everything is only one loonie, including hot dogs, french fries, candy floss and games. The best is that all rides are only one dollar. The Fair Board felt that this - new format will help increase the attendance on opening night and get the fair off to a good start. They would like to remind people that it isn't too late to enter the Fair Pageant Contest (call Kate at 983- 6296) or the parade (call Charles at 987-4551). Another important reminder this year is the entry mail-in deadline of August 23. Please read the important notice inside the front page of the prize list. Optimist Dance You can get into the Orono Fair free (after six p.m.) on Saturday night, if you buy your ticket to the Optimist Club's dance which takes place at the fair from nine p.m. to one a.m. The ticket also includes a great mixture of musical styles from Rjay the Dee-Jay and a cold buffet. Proceeds will go to the Optimist Club where the money will be used for youth and children's programs in Newcastle and the surrounding surrounding area.
