Pace 2 Tlie Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 3, 1997 Orono Fair Starts Thursday This is the weekend when you can have your once-a- ycar splurge on cotton candy, red toffee candy apples, and ferris wheel rides while attending the 145th annual Durham Central Fair in Orono. Grounds Open Thursday Afternoon The event, held at the fairgrounds fairgrounds in Orono just west of Hwy 115/35, will open to the public on Thursday afternoon, afternoon, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m. The arena opens at 5 o'clock and entertainment at the grandstand kicks off at 6 p.m. The fair parade will get to the grounds about 6:30 p.m. The official opening is at 7 p.m. with guest speaker Brenda Metcalf. Next is the Holstein Show and happening in tandem will be the Ambassador of the Fair Pageant. At 8 p.m. don't miss the media and politicians battling it out in the Milking Contest. After that, the Farmers' Olympics will take center stage. Demolition Derby Friday On Friday, lots of fun will be had by children from the local schools, starting off with a school parade filled with floats and happy faces. There.will also be games, contests, the famous Tug of War between the schools and Puffy the Clown. Also on Friday, there will be.Poultry Judging, a 4-H ' Dairy Club Achievement Day, the Jr. Dairy Showmanship, and the Kawartha Jersey Show. If you can't get to the fair in lime to see these .shows, there will be the 4-H Durham East Sheep Club Wether Lamb Show, thé Champion Steer Judging, and the Wether Lamb and Champion Steer Sale in the early evening hours. Don't forget that the Radio Controlled Car and Truck open practice is around I p.m. or that the midway opens mid-afternoon at 3:30. The Bowmanville Toastmasters' Spelling Bee Pair Asked to Girl Pose for Registration is at 5 p.m. and it takes place at 6 p.m. The Newcastle Lions Bingo Tent opens at 6 o'clock and the Prize Cake Auction is a half hour later. The Demolition Derby features a mini-car heat this year, and all this begins at 7:30. At 8 p.m. the Old Time Fiddler's Contest begins inside the arena. Full Slate of Saturday Events Saturday is jump-started with the Saddle Horse Show and Rabbit Judging at 9 a.in. Some of the activities you won't want to miss are the antique tractor races, the horse shoe tournament, the Light and Heavy Horse Line Classes, and the Junior Beef and Beef Cattle shows. Entertainment will be presented presented by the Searson Family from the Ottawa Valley, "Barney" in concert and a karate club demonstration. The day will be rounded out with the fair dance in the community center above the arena. Sunday Harness Racing Sunday will boost the hunter show, the ever popular Big Brothers Pet Show, and remote Car and Truck pulling demonstrations. There will be vintage tractor demonstrations demonstrations and a sheep show. Sunday's biggest draw will be the eight heats of harness harness racing with para mutual wagering at 1 p.m. Also al 1 p.m. is the annual gospel concert concert with Lyle & Yvonne Bender and friends show. Prior to the gospel concert the C & W Family Show will take place. Piglet Race Don't forget that the Orono Town Hall Board sponsors Piglet Races every 30 minutes throughout the fair and that the school displays, displays, culinary arts and arts and crafts displays arc available available for public viewing throughout the weekend. With sunny weather expected this weekend, perhaps perhaps the Durham Central Fair will top its average of 12,000 during the four-day event. Children from Bowmanville's Happy Apple nursery school offer freshly- picked apples to the horses at Watson's Farm on an outing last week. The Hwy. 2 apple orchard was one of several local businesses that the group (aged 2 to 10) visited over the summer. Richards Staff Writer Durham Regional Police say a man in his 40's stopped a 10-year-old Bowmanville girl as she was riding her bicycle along the Bowmanville Creek on Monday afternoon, Sept. 1. He told her he wanted to lake her picture and put it on the Internet. Inspector Matthews', of the Durham Regional Police Services, told The Statesman on Tuesday the man was wearing a white ball cap and sported a camera. The photographer photographer was accompanied by a female who wore a black ball cap, jean shorts, a peach- coloured shirt and also carried carried a camera. The mother of the 10- year-old told The Canadian Statesman on Tuesday morning, morning, there were more details about the two individuals. "My daughter said the man might have been in his 40's, as his hair was graying. He was clean-shaven, too. His cap had a red bill on it. "The woman had reddish hair and a black ball cap that had the word 'cool' on the front of the hat." The man "look pictures of her doing poses and making funny faces," said the girl's mother. She said he told the 10- ycar-old that the picture would appear on the Internet.
