Private funeral was held on Friday, August 29th, with inter- ' ment in Cartwright Cemetery. Last Wednesday the Newcastle Lions had their corn roast at the R.B. Rickards' home. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Ken Elaschuk Darren and Danny of Oshawa, the Doug Rickard family and the Robin Rickards had a family gathering gathering at the home of their parents, Jean and Brenton Rickard. We had an enjoyable enjoyable boat ride on Sturgeon Lake to Fcnelon Falls. Mrs. Elizabeth Skelding accompanied Jack and Nan ' Skelding, of Port Perry to Newtonville on Sunday evening when they were dinner guests of Bill and Mary Skelding. On Thursday evening a family barbecue was held at the home of Rob and Alyssa Hewson, of Ajax. The Markles and Powells were having a farewell party for Andrew Markle, who left for a new position in Santiago, Chile, on Saturday night. Sunday supper guests of Stan and Kay Powell were Beth and Wayne Markle, Scarborough, Alyssa and Rob, Ajax, Dale Hunt and Adrien who had been to Petrolia where Adrien played with the Kendal Mosquitoes. They reached the semi-finals in the All Ontario D Championship tournament. Meanwhile, brother Russell Hunt was in Huntsville playing with the Kendal Midgets who also reached the semi-finals in their All Ontario tournament. Mr. Albert Pearce had a busy weekend attending the Kendal Seniors Baseball tournament. tournament. Newtonville Card Results There were 14 tables of card players at Newtonville Hall on by Hazel and Jack Crago Friday evening August 29th. Winners were: 1st Charles Finnie with 89 points, 2nd Lorna Crockett 88, 3rd Martha Farrow 86, 4th Reg McCool 82, 5th Dorothy Branch 82 and 6th Percy Clark 80 points. Draw winners were: Lyle McMahon, Marlene Stacey, Lena Graham, Alf Pigott, Dorothy Branch, Walter Murphy and Yvonne Baziw. The next card party at Newtonville will be held on Friday evening, September 12th. United Church Sunday, August 31, Reverend Donald Stiles based his sermon -- Windows on the Gospel, Beyond the Garden -- - on the windows in memory of the Wallbridge family and on the windows in memory of W. Frank Rickard and Bessie and in honour of Clara Rickard. Senior Choir practice resumes September llth. 4-H Club News The first meeting of the Canadian Heritage 4-H Club was held August 21, 1997, at Wilmot Orchards owned by Charles Stevens. The meeting was joined together with the Field Crops Club. Mr. Stevens started off the meeting by telling the two clubs about how he got into the blueberry business. Later, he told the clubs about all of the hard work he went through to make the blueberries blueberries grow. Then came the best part. He let us eat the blueberries right off the bush! And believe me they were DELICIOUS! Mr. Stevens is a great explainer on how to grow blueberries, as well as a magnificent magnificent blueberry producer! The Canadian Heritage Club then nominated people' for the enrolled officers. They are as follows: President - Alaina Sharpe, Vice President - Jennifer Kroft, Secretary - Emily Metcalf, Press Reporter - Emily Vice. The next meeting of the Canadian Heritage Club will be Monday, September 15, 1997 at Solina Hall. Thursday, September 4th, the Trillium Unit has a noon pot luck luncheon. Sunday School registration is September 7th and 14th. News from St. George's Despite the Labour Day weekend holiday, a large congregation congregation filled the church on Sunday for the formal farewell to Reverend Ann Tottenham. Altar flowers this week were a gorgeous arrangement of multi-coloured gladiolas from Pat Blaker's garden. Wardens John Lindsay and Sam Brereton presented a cheque to Ann on behalf of the congregation in thanksgiving for her two years of ministry in the parish. After the service the ACW served lunch for everyone in the parish hall. On September I Oth from 9 a.tii. to noon the Wednesday Morning Group will resume its weekly meetings for quilting, crafts and fellowship. On September llth the ACW will have a pot luck supper supper and guest speaker in the parish hall at 6 p.m. New members members are warmly welcomed to both these groups. The next Advisory Board meeting will take place on September 18lh at 7:30 p.m. The Sound of Music The Wilmot Creek Chorus, along with The Rhythmaires, were the final performers to play a summer concert at Bowmanville's Rotary Park. The chorus, under the direction of Vi Wilson, is pictured above, during the show last Thursday, August 28th. Throughout the summer, the park has been the venue for free concerts by groups ranging from pipe bands and brass bands to fiddlers and singers. All of the performances have been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses. The volunteers who organized the concert have announced they arc planning another series next year.
