Page 12 The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, September 6,1997 $20 Counterfeit Bills Used in Durham Region The Durham Regional Police Service is warning local merchants about counterfeit twenty dollar bills which have recently been passed in the Durham area. Over the past three weeks police have received dozens of reports involving twenty dollar bills bearing the following four serial numbers: AS17621979, ASG4214968, ASG4214969. These bank notes are new series bills which have an optical optical security device (commonly known as a hologram) on the top left hand corner of the bill face. YF8502801 - Bank notes bearing this serial number are old series bills and do not have the.optical security device. Merchants who suspect that a bill may be counterfeit should compare it to another in their possession. No counterfeit counterfeit bill looks as good as the genuine bank note. Anyone with information regarding counterfeit money should contact the local police service. Shave a Mountie September 9th Seven Bowmanville RCMP Officers including the Detachment Officer in Charge, Inspector A1 Roney, have agreed to have their heads shaved in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Bruce Dennison Bone Marrow Society in support of little Jessica. Over the course of the past eight (8) months, little Jessica, the 9 year old daughter of a Bowmanville RCMP officer and a GM electrician, has bravely fought the terrible disease of leukemia through numerous chemotherapy treatments. Jessica is presently undergoing further chemotherapy treatment in the hope of receiving a bone marrow transplant in the near future. The RCMP Bowmanville Detachment is organizing a series of fund raising events over the next several months. The "Shave a Mountie" day will take place at Bowmanville Detachment on Tuesday, September 9th, 97 at 10:00 a.m. Mounties will be available for photos or for the cameras during during the shaving session. To date, the Mounties who are participating in the 'head shave' have raised funds through sponsorship but will welcome welcome pledges from members of the community. Donations can be made, at any time, through the Bank of Montreal to the Bruce Dennison Bone Marrow Society, by calling 1-888- DMÀRROW or on the day of the 'head shave'. Purchasing Manager Telephone: (905) 623-3379, Ext. 268 35-1 SC RCMP Make Major Heroin Seizure As a result of an investigation investigation conducted by the RCMP Bowmanville Detachment Drug Section in cooperation with Her Majesty's Customs Service, United Kingdom and Canada Customs a major heroin seizure was effected on the 20th of August 1997. This investigation has been ongoing for approximately approximately two weeks and involves the importation and seizure of approximately 1 kilogram of high grade heroin (80 to 90% purity injectable heroin) originating from India. The seized heroin was shipped via commercial aircraft aircraft from New Delhi, India, and destined to an address in Scarborough, Ontario. The package was intercepted by United Kingdom Customs Services while in transit through London, England. The heroin was concealed within the lining of vests and Indian dresses. On Wednesday the 20th of August 1997, a Controlled Drug Substances Act search warrant was executed at a residence residence in Scarborough, Ontario. On the same day one male person was arrested. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of a second male suspect on Thursday the 28th of August 1997. Both suspects have appeared in court in Toronto and are held for bail hearings. Both suspects have been charged with conspiracy to import heroin contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to the Controlled Drug Substances Act. The estimated street value of the seizure is $1.5 million Canadian. Popular Day Camp Boosts CLOCA Surplus As of the end of July, Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority staff are projecting a year-end surplus of over $24,000. This surplus represents an increase of $7,000 over the amount previously reported in June.
