The piglet races at the Durham Central Fair almost didn't happen this.year. However, thanks to a farmer in Gores Landing who hadn't even seen a pig race, the show will go on. Grono resident, Regional Councillor and Orono Town Hall Board member, Ann Dreslinski, told The Independent this year's champions of the races are wild about dog biscuits. "We got them the multi-flavoured type," Dreslinski confided. The pigs, one red-brown, one grey and the other white gathered around her as she handed out treats as a reward for their race around the obstacle track at the fairgrounds in Orono. She, along with other members of the hall board, are in their 10th year of providing children of all ages, with racing animals at the Durham Central Fair. Some years they have had ducks jumping and ducking through the track and other years they have had pigs. This is a pig year. 30-Pounders The 30 : pound porkers were only recruited at the last minute. Dreslinski recalled that when she came back from a conference last week there was a message on her answering machine from Elizabeth Bovaird "telling me that they weren't able to get any piglets yet." Time was running out. "We ; phoned everyone we knew, looking for piglets. We finally got lucky. There was a farmer, Kevin Brady, in Gores Landing whti had three different- looking piglets. But, we had to come and get them before eight o'clock on Friday morning. "So, off we went on Friday with Elizabeth's new van and a large metal dog crate to put them in." ' She noted after picking up the pigs and paying for them -- $55 each -- they went to Bewdley for breakfast at a local restaurant. They had the special...bacon and eggs. The piglet races are set to begin on Friday afternoon, during Children's Day at the fair, starting at 1 p.m. and going until 3 p.m. every 20 to 30 minutes. On Saturday and- Sunday, the races will take place between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Richards Staff Writer Looking across a rural landscape north of Taunton Rd., Bill Lishman predicted that a multi-million dollar business proposed for the site will "boost the rural economy." He adds: "we're taking a raw resource and adding value to it." Lishman said it is hoped that Paula, his business partner and wife, will be able to build a 2,400 square metre (25,824 square foot) fur garment garment designing, manufacturing shop and showroom for Lishman's knitted knitted fur products off Taunton Road, west of Leskard Road. He noted no animals would be killed at this location, and the tanning tanning of the fur actually takes place in the United States. The facility, he said, would be as environmentally friendly as they can make it. The building will be earth bermed. However, some local residents have registered their opposition to the idea. Phillip Pisani told The Independent the business should not be located in a rural area and added that he believes it would have an impact on the quality of water in local creeks. He also predicts that it will lead to additional development in the future. He will be expressing his opposition opposition to the plan at a public meeting of Clarington's planning committee Monday, September 8th, in the Clarington Town Hall. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Lishman said the Clarington location was chosen after a proposal for thé facility hit a brick wall in Scugog. However, that plan included a number of other scenarios which are not included in this application. The robber entered Guardian Drugs at 130 Waverley Road South around 8:50 p.m., armed with a hand gun. He approached the pharmacist pharmacist and demanded narcotics. The suspect fled from the store in a westerly direction. The victim was not hurt. Durham Regional Police say the incident was similar to a robbery that took place on August 27 at Courtice Pharmacy in the new plaza at the corner of Highway Two and Courtice Rd. "It was the same type of robbery. robbery. It happened just before closing closing time -- the same MO," says Sergeant Jim Grimley. He hopes anyone with information information will come forward to help nab the culprit before he strikes again. The suspect is described as a male, in his mid 20's, about 5'7." He was wearing a Halloween mask, a dark green nylon jacket and grey jogging pants.
