In our first match, Whitby would supply the opposition. It took a strong defensive effort by Darlington during the early moments before the 86'ers would eventually score the only goal of the game. On the play a determined effort by Trevor Delpippo was slopped at the goal line, but Jeff Bouma quickly arrived to knock in the rebound. In our second match, the 86'ers hosted North York Azzuri. As it was, this team was all that stood between Darlington and the C.S.L. divisional championship. championship. Rickard Recreational Complex Bowmanville Badgers Win Silver at Provincials The second year Bowmanville Badgers Midget Ladies' Fastball Club reached the Provincial Championship Finals before bowing out to the Ottawa- Osgoode team. The silver medal winning Badgers played super defensive ball throughout the tournament before coming up a win short of becoming Provincial Champions. The Grand Championship Tournament featured the 12 top qualifiers from across the province. The Badgers started the tournament against the two top ranked teams, the London Oak Ridge squad and the pre-tournament favourite, Chingcousey Cougars. In the opening game against a strong London team the Badgers prevailed by à 4- 1 score. The game featured a stingy Bowmanville defense, an effective six hitter by winning winning pitcher Lindsay Knocker, and her battery mate Jen Cowan and timely hitting throughout the lineup. The second game against the highly touted Chingcousey Cougars saw the Badgers upset the favourites by a convincing 6- 2 count. Once again the Badgers formula for success was an air tight defense, strong pitching and an explosive explosive . hitting attack which banged out 11 hits. Lindsay Knocker was strong in limiting limiting the Cougars to only 4 hits in hurling the complete game victory. In the Badgers third game, the Ottawa-Osgoode. team exploded for five runs in the first inning in handing Bowmanville its first loss in the double knockout format tournament. The Badgers managed only four hits in this tilt with Carter with a pair, and Hare and Ly wak each singling singling in the shutout loss. In the semi-final game the Badgers had to beat the London Oak Ridge team again to move on to the final gold medal match. The game turned out to be one of the best played during the tournament tournament with Badgers edging the stubborn London team by a 4- 3 score in a very exciting game." Winning pitcher Lindsay Knocker scattered six hits while relying heavily on the Badgers infield which continued to play outstanding ball turning 18 ground balls into London outs. The gold medal game featured featured a rematch with Ottawa- Osgoode squad who had advanced undefeated throughout the tournament. The Ottawa team were strong in defeating the Badgers by a 6-3 score allowing only three hits by Deighan, Lywak and Carter. The scrappy Bowmanville team never quit, but could not get the key hit at the right time to turn the game around. The Ottawa club gained control early and led throughout the game. When the Badgers failed to score in the sixth inning with bases loaded and trailing by a 5-3 score, it spelled the end to a gallant effort.
