(seconds) Foot Pain and Orthotics QUESTION: Telma, I have been told that I have osteoarthritis in my big toe.. The joint is very sore and it hurts when I walk. How can orthotics help? Osteoarthritis is a medical diagnosis of a painful inflammation inflammation in the joints. It is important to be clear what the orthotic can and cannot do in a case like this. The orthotic cannot change the present level of inflammation in your joints. For example, if you take an x-ray today of your joint and it shows arthritic changes, changes, and you retake that x-ray a year later after wearing orthotics, it may not change the appearance of that joint on x-ray. What the orthotic can help with is why that toe got inflamed in the first place. Just think about the process process of walking for a moment. There are three phases to walking. The first phase is heel strike, when the heel strikes the ground. The second phase is mid- stance, when the foot is supposed supposed to lock to a rigid lever to prepare for the third phase, which is push-off. ing off properly, you now may be pushing off more with thé first toe. This in time can lead to inflammation of the joint, which can then become osteoarthritic. The orthotic can help you walk with as normal a gait as possible, minimizing the pain you get with walking. One question that people never ask is why did that joint get inflamed to start with. As a physiotherapist, I am always looking for the cause of a problem. Many times what we see over pronation, or rolling in of the foot, when we do a computerized gait analysis. When you over pronate, instead of getting a nice push-off you are now either pushing off too hard with the inside of your first toe or depending on the way you compensate you could be pushing off too hard with your third, fourth and fifth toes. In time that can lead to arthritis. If you have a problem like this, I would recommend that you come in for a free computerized computerized gait analysis, get a scan of your feet and in most cases, orthotics help very nicely with thisiproblem. Now push-off should be done from the first and second toes. If you have flat feet and you tend to roll in when you walk, what happens happens is that instead of push- Grant Physiotherapy is located at: 214 King St. E., Bowmanville (905) 623-2783 Ontario Champions Steve West, of the Kendal Eagles, drives a ball into the ground during the All-Ontario senior 'D' baseball championships championships that were played during Labour Day Weekend. Lawn Bowlers Roll to Victory Having missed a week of reporting events of Bowmanville Lawn Bowlers, there is some catching up to do. First of all congratulations to Frank Petrie and Bob Cameron who won the Weeks Memorial Trophy at Whitby on Sunday, August 24, men's pairs of course! Tuesday afternoon, August 26, we had as our guests twen- . ty-four bowlers from Wilmot Creek for the first half of a mixed-treble tournament (V game). The outcome of this day was for Wilmot players one win, one tie, and six losses so that made Bowmanville six wins, one tie and one loss. The second half of the tournament will take place at Wilmot Creek on Tuesday, September 9, at which time they have promised to "turn the tables" and set us back on our heels - will let you know how it all adds up. A two-game, 50 plus tournament tournament was played at Bowmanville on Sunday, August 31, between showers I might add and during a variety of temperatures from cool to warm to humid. A real variety of style and color appeared in jackets, head coverings and umbrellas. Who says we do not take the game seriously? This was also a mixed treble set-up with the following results - 2 game high and trophy winner - Orval Atkinson, Skip, with Albert Knibb and Marian Knibb of Whitby, 2 game second second high winner Skip George Sweet with Wilma McLaughlin and Dale Reynolds of Oshawa; 2 game third high winner Skip Alex Hawke with Konrad Mayer and June Hawke of Whitby; 2 game fourth high Skip ~ Larry McLaren with Helen McLaren and Jack Tisdale of Oshawa; one game high Skip Ken Dawson with Joe Brown and Norma Wilson of Oshawa; a special award was givén to one game winner Skip Doug Marshall with Arliene Marshall and Don Little. This tournament was sponsored by Midland Walwyn through the efforts of A1 McKay. Sunday, September 7, is the date of our last tournament for this season, again in the form of mixed trebles. As in the first game, the Mason Windows side would play with a great deal of maturity while nursing the slim lead, but their patience was rewarded when Jeff Bouma broke through the Azzuri defence only to be dragged down by a defender within the penalty area. A penalty shot was awarded and Devon Potter easily beat the keeper to give the side a 2-0 win. Goalkeeper Steve Mills turned in another spectacular effort in recording his seventh straight league shutout. Although this was Darlington's weakest effort of this season, they were still able to gain the result that was required to capture capture their division. On Friday evening, Mason Windows met Pickering in a quarter final C.S.L. cup match. On this night, the 86'ers definitely definitely came to play. When all was done, Darlington would walk away with a well deserved 5-2 win. The attack was lead by Brandon Kane and Jeff Bouma with two goals each, with Derek VanHeuvelen notching one. With this win, Darlington advances to the Cup semi-finals, where they will again meet N.Y. Azzuri. The 86'ers wish to send Brad Griffin the best of luck on a speedy recovery and quick return to action.
