Durham Briefs Councillor Says Pickering Lacks Confidence in Hydro A meeting was hosted by Pickering Council recently to question Ontario Hydro officials about Hydro's report declaring that the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (PNGS) was operating at "minimally accepted standards" standards" and the latest revelation that 40,000 gallons of oil was illegally dumped into an on-site landfill. Carl Andognini, author of the report and the chief nuclear officer for Hydro, assured Council that Hydro "will share everything we have" and that the four nuclear reactors being takcn-off-line will not be permanently shut down. Ward 2 Councillor Doug Dickerson, in whose ward the PNGS is located, slated that the level of confidence in Hydro enjoyed by Pickering residents remains virtually virtually at zero as a result of all the mishaps. Dickerson demanded that Hydro agree to fund an environmental team, assembled by the Town, to investigate investigate exactly what is in the landfill site; to determine if there arc any toxins; to determine the method of extraction, extraction, where it can be re-located and how it will get there safely; and what, if any, plumes exist underground from BP&fTWI ' '■ r r >m 'he site. The celebration celebration will be held at the Bowmanville Lions Centre. During the ceremonies, Lions District Governor George Fournier of Kingston, Ontario will present the members of the new club with their official charter. Yet to be officially confirmed will be the attendance of Larry Hannah, • Clarington Councillor; Alex Shepherd, MP; and John O'Toole, MPP; plus members members of the District A3 Lions family. Members of the Lions Club of Bowmanville, who sponsored the formation formation of the Courtice Lions Club, will also be on hand to congratulate the new club. Courtice will be proud too, to have such a line group serving their community," said Lion Jim Coombcs, President of the Bowmanville Club. Fundraising Under the supervision of a committee of Bowmanville Lions, the new Courtice Club established established a fundraising foothold in the community by teaming up with Courtice residents to run the Courtice Carnival held last May. Discussions are now taking place to continue continue the carnival under the banner of the Lions Club of Courtice as the "Courtice Lions Carnival".
