A large number of young families in the Ciarington area is contributing contributing to an increase in the overall numbers at both public and separate school boards. Early enrollment numbers numbers in the Northumberland- Clarington Public School Board show total enrolment enrolment at elementary and secondary levels to be up by 650 students -- almost double what was projected. Most of that growth continues to be in the western western part of the board's jurisdiction. Enrolment in public elementary elementary schools is up three percent over last year, and enrollment at the public secondary schools is up 2.1 percent. Last year, the total enrollment was 24,677. "The board's heavy growth pattern is continuing continuing and it's clear that it is going to create even more pressure for new buildings," buildings," says School Board Chair Bob Willshcr. The Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Ciarington Roman Catholic Separate School Board is also experiencing a big jump in the number of students. The board is expecting 13,026 students across its jurisdiction. Preliminary figures show the highest growth area to be Ciarington. "The highest growth area is in Ciarington, with over 100 new kindergarten students at Mother Teresa Elementary School in Courticc," states Nancy Sharpe, supervisor of communications communications for the separate separate school board.
