Neighbours Debate Rural Industry for Clarington From page 1 municipality's Official Plan and this would go against it. Bill Lishman spoke on behalf of his wife, Paula, who is currently in Japan doing a fashion show of her knitted fur garments. He said he understands the concerns voiced by the residents. "If something was going in next to my home, 1 would be asking questions," lie said. Looking towards the property's property's ncighours and also at the councillors, Lishman observed: "Most people who arc in opposition to what we want to do, don't know what we want to do." Lishman explained the process the fur-bearing animal animal skins go through before they reach the Lishman plant. They arc tanned and dyed outside in South Carolina. Much of cutting, spinning, and knitting is done by home workers, while the administrative administrative work is done on site, he said. Other work on site will be "the final inspection, shipping shipping and smaller details." He handed out copies of the latest catalogue which features models showing the fur fashions and also, the family home on Shirley Road which is an earth integrated building. The plant in Clarington, he said, "would be an earth- friendly architectural building that fits into the environment. We would be taking a few hcctrcs and improving it. " The idea is to build the facility and then cover it with soil "to create a rolling hill...like a (man-made) drumlin." When asked why the company company wanted such a building, Lishman said, "when you put people into a more beautiful place, they will create beautiful beautiful products. "It will cost more than an industrial lot with the raised septic system," he said. But that is what the company would like to do. A number of agencies will be asked to make comments about the Lishman application application before the proposal is once again discussed by Clarington's councillors. Have you seen it? Reynolds noted hives arc usually made up with two brood drawers and two honey production drawers. Each of his hives holds 50,000 to 60,000 bees and each worker bee will produce one-half a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. He has two hives near his home, several at Wilmot Orchards (the blueberry blueberry and apple growers) and still others in Northumberland County. Walking towards the two hives near his home, after getting getting his beekeeper's outfit on, Reynolds placed a bundle of supplies on the ground. He quickly prepared his smoker can, although it took a while for the smoker to actually work. Once done, Reynolds walked over to the hives while lie explained that, when working with bees "your movements arc slow and measured." After placing the smoker at the entrances to the hive to get the bees into thinking the place was on lire, he waited a bit. "Most people don't realize that the smoking of a hive is just a eon job. When the bees sense the smoke, they figure that they've got to get out of the hive quickly, so they start gorging on the honey. Once they are full, they fly slower and arc more docile." Taking a scraping tool out of a pocket, he pried up one of the frames to take a look at it. Then, he slowly turned around to show glistening honey oozing out of the comb and hundreds of bees clinging to the frame. ■ "People have a fear of honey bees. They shouldn't be feared, but maybe respected," respected," Reynolds said. Reynolds will be one of the 38 locations on the Durham Countryside Adventure featuring Clarington attractions this Saturday September Reynolds is and Sunday, 13 and 14. located on Farrow Road, off Hwy 2, just before the "hole-in-the-wall" railway overpass. Bee-lieve it or Not One can (usually) predict, the severity of the upcoming winter by the amount of honey produced by bees. Bees keep the temperature of the hive at 70 degrees during the winter months by continuously moving. Bees pollinate 50 different fruits and vegetables. Soybean honey tastes close to buckwheat honey, which is harder to come by, these days. It is usual to have 50,000 to 60,000 bees per hive. Bees will travel up to three miles from the hive and will go even further to get to an especially good crop. When around bees, don't wear clothing derived from animals. They're more likely to attack you. A queen bee will produce 2,000 to 3,000 eggs per day. Bees only live between six and seven weeks. Male bees or drones, "arc totally useless" work-wise, as they have no stingers and don't work. They only hang around waiting for the queen bee to call for them in a mating flight. Beekeeping is the world's oldest form of agriculture. Registered Assets Over $300,000? DID YOU KNOW THAT 50% OF YOUR RRIF MAY HAVE TO BE GIVEN TO THE GOVERNMENT 180 DAYS AFTER YOUR DEATH?
