The brand new library occupies a south corner at the newly-completed Courlicc Community Complex. Elegantly done with auburn wood tones, plenty of natural light, and comfortable comfortable upholstered chairs, it is definitely a place where you'll be con- Hall Bookings Are Going Fast The new Courlicc Complex will be THE place to parly! The brand new community community hall, with its adjoining outdoor terrace, is booking up pretty fast, notes Carol Gonder of the town's Community Services Department. Unpartitioned, the hall seats 200. And with its modern kitchen, liquor licence and raised stage it's already proving to be a preferred location for anyone anyone planning a wedding, dance or athletic banquet. '■* "There arc dances booked all through November," notes Gonder. "Saturdays in December arc booked solid. I think therejg probably only two weekends still vacant in October. We've even got bookings as far ahead as a wedding in May of 1998." Rental rates at existing halls in local and neighboring neighboring areas were studied before the Courlicc fees were decided. "We are right on par with everybody," everybody," notes Gonder. Rates vary, depending on services required and day of booking. Weekday, weekend and holiday rates differ. Half and full hall Just For Kids Clarington Kids daycare daycare and nursery school has been up and running at the Courlicc Community Complex since September 2. This privately-run outfit outfit has turned its leased section of the brand new facility into a virtual paradise paradise for kids, with everything everything from children's books, games and toys, to a giant crawling maze that fills an entire room. Clarington Kids got off the ground in Courlicc a few years ago as a home- based child care business with ten kids. As of last week, there were 42 kids registered at the Courlicc complex. Judi Rigolti, daycare supervisor, says she has . programs Ipr all kids, toddler toddler age and up, and a convenient convenient early drop-off for commuter parents, loo. Shelving the final stacks of books last week, branch supervisor Christine Evans was clearly clearly excited about the opening. opening. "We're all a little tired and achy, but it's great to see this coming to fruition," said Evans. "I think the library will be a focal point. It's part of the Courlicc Community Complex and that builds on a sense of community." Evans calls the collection collection fantastic. Ninety-nine point nine per cent of the books arc new. A count of the books, cassettes and videos that have been assembled over the past few years in anticipation of the new library adds up to a total of over 23,000 items. Everything will be on loan to Courtice library users as well as available to other Clarington residents residents through an interbranch interbranch loan system. Margie Singleton, deputy director for the Clarington Public Library system, is also proud of the new collection, pointing pointing out that it offers the latest information and lots of new titles that have earned good reviews. In addition, there arc more of the things students seem to be on the lookout for, such as literary criticism. "Our opening day collection collection is about half the size of the Bowmanville collection," says Singleton, "but it should continue to grow extensively, extensively, perhaps by another 10,000 items within the first year alone." Courlicc Library cards are free for Clarington residents. residents. Other Durham residents residents arc welcome to use the library but must pay a nominal charge to a get library card. Book Shelves BOOK 'EM - Library technician Virginia Davy makes sure the books are in proper order as she and other library staff get the Courtice branch ready for its grand opening opening on Sept. 13. The collection collection includes over 23,000 books, cassettes, CDs and videos, the vast majority of which arc brand new.
