The two school officials arc joined by "honorary student" Kevin Malda, who was one of youngest children to attend the opening of the new elementary school last September. Jane Koenc and her teachers have a new Sunday School program all lined up and ready to go. Bethesda Cemetery Board is holding their public public meeting early this year. Local historian, Jack Gordon, was invited to Newcastle Public School on Wednesday, September 10, 1997, when the cornerstone was cemented in, after the time capsule was placed. Students watched as School Board Chairman Bob Willshcr and Trustee Bcv Wakefield did the honours of attending to this ceremony. On the weekend Jack Gordon's display of Massey memorabilia was in the historical historical room and in the Great Hall of the Newcastle Community flail. Slides of early Massey equipment and buildings were also available for viewing. This was one of the tour spots on the Durham Countryside Adventure. On Monday evening, September 8th, the Sunshine Unit of the UCW met with speaker being member Shirley Coyle whose topic was Pastoral Care. On Sunday Stan and Kay Powell enjoyed another birthday birthday celebration for Kay at the home of Judy Powell and Lynn Pigott, Oshawa. Beth and Wayne Markle, Scarborough, and Alyssa Hcwson, Ajax were also in attendance. Prior to the birthday dinner, dinner, Stan and Kay had visited some of the tour spots on the Durham Adventure. Mr. Albert Pearce was in Oshawa on the weekend attending the Oshawa Durham College Fall Classic Baseball Tournament. Four teams were involved: Durham; Erie, from Buffalo; Onondaga from Syracuse, and Brock from St. Catharines. Durham went to the finals but lost to Brock in the final game. On Tuesday, September 9 Mr. Harry Wade was feted to a breakfast birthday party at Massey House. In the evening son Bill and daughter-in-law Margaret, took Harry out to dinner. The ladies' sister, Bernice Henderson, of Ncwtonvillc, remains a patient in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. On Tuesday, September 9 the Seniors Bowling resumed. Scoring over 150 that day were: Marg Wade 252, 203, Joyce Stacey 187, Albert Pearce 159, John Guay 177, Eleanor Perrin 154, Russell Powell 170, Bertha Powell 201, Merril Henry 178, 159, Alec Martin 157, 205, and Stan Powell 186. The Fall Show of the Newcastle Horticultural Society takes place on Tuesday evening, September 23rd. Besides the vegetables and flower exhibits, homemade homemade apple and pumpkin pies arc among the entries. So, members, remember to do the baking! Reading scriptures were Andrew Murphy and Christopher Selby and reading reading during skits were Amanda Storks, Michael Sharpe and Jaime Wright. Flowers in the church were placed in memory of Dunrcath Walton, fondly remembered by Jean and Brcnton Rickard, Ruth and Mary Margaret Bonathon.
