"The message from government is that more should he done at the community community level," Howard says. "Well, this is the community level." "All the money raised stays in the local community," community," Howard points out. "And one campaign is certainly certainly more efficient than 40." Among the agencies that receive United Way dollars arc John Howard Society, Bethesda House, Community Care, Big Brothers, food banks, meals on wheels, YWCA, and the Canadian Mental Health Association to name a few. Every few years, a needs analysis is conducted conducted to ensure the necessary funds are going to areas where need is most crucial. crucial. In Durham, where the instance of substance abuse is 25% higher than the provincial average, help is especially needed for addiction counselling programs. There is also a critical need for violence counselling, Howard notes. Morison says funds will be raised "a thousant different ways" from job site campaigns, requests in the mail, through corporate corporate gifts and from schools who'll create their own unique fundraising ideas. The backbone of the campaign, however, is the workplace. Eighty percent of donations come from workplace deductions. Ken Thibcau, campaign co-chair and president of the Durham Region Labour Council, said the continuing support from the workforce is greatly appreciated. "It's great to see the breadth of support for such a worthwhile community effort. I have always been a supporter and am proud of the long-standing partnership partnership labour has enjoyed with the United Way ... I am looking forward to a successful and rewarding campaign. Many people need the help, and I know the community will respond generously," said Thibcau. „ J1ISI1P fr.i vÿsri •* Orono Meets Hollywood Orono residents arc getting used to big cameras like this one on their streets.
