The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 17, 1997 Patte 11 Lions Support Clorington Youth Centre by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer On Monday, September 8th, the Bowmanville Lions Club heard the latest progress report on the Claringlon Youth Centre. Dianna Eastwood, who is the executive director at the John Howard Society, has volunteered her time to act as administrator at the new centre, which will be housed along with other social service agencies at the old fireball on Church Street in Bowmanville. Studies indicated the need for a place within Clarington for youths to meet and find out information However, Eastwood made it clear to Lions Club members that she is not the One in charge. That responsibility goes to a specially selected team of 10 enthusiastic young peo ple, aged 13 to 20. "They arc my bosses," s|ic says. Although this Youth Council will be the ultimate ultimate judge of what programs programs and recreational activities to introduce, they will have ready access to four adults experienced experienced in youth issues who make up the Youth Advisory Team. "A big part of my job and the Advisory Council is to attempt to have them (the Youth Council) focus on some very strategic goals," Eastwood said. "We're there to provide them with some guidance to help them orchestrate what they want to happen." happen." The idea for a community community youth centre was first presented to the town nine years ago. Studies commissioned commissioned by municipal council indicated the need for a place within Clarington for youths to meet and find out information information about everything from athletic clubs to counselling. counselling. About $ 10,000 is needed needed to kick-start youth pro grams. Paul Morris is now going out into the community community to raise this initial start-up money. Perhaps the biggest stumbling block to programming programming is lack of transportation, transportation, he notes. "The problem we have is: How do you gel youth from Hampton, Orono, Newcastle and Courtice to a central location?" Limited funds for fulltime fulltime staff may also become a concern in the years ahead, he predicts. Citing alarming trends of teen suicide, as well the realities of drug abuse and domestic violence, Morris says the youth centre will offer benefits to the whole community. "It's not just the youth who need this. It's the adults and society as a whole." Residents of Clarington cannot afford to turn a blind eye to youth problems. problems. The same shocking things that happen in New York and Los Angeles happen happen in our towns too, lie says. Mike Trudeau (left), of the Bowmanville Lions Club, thanks Dianna Eastwood and Paul Morris for their recent progress report on the Claringlon Youth Centre. Renovations inside the old fireball, where the youth centre will be housed, are now underway. Projected opening date is early November.
