Island Road Needs to Work Scugog Island's main road is in urgent need of repairs, says Councillor Marilyn Pearce. "It's been on the books since 1976. For the longest time, there have been little repairs done on it," she observed. But, it needs more work. Now is the time for the Durham Region to step in, she said at a meeting of Regional Council earlier this month. There were a number of comments from Oshawa councillors who didn't like the idea of putting money into the road leading to the Blue Heron Casino on Scugog Island. Councillor Brian Nicholson was flabbergasted to think "that as soon as we fix the road it will be turned over to the municipality." Claringlon Mayor Diane Hamre noted that before Hwy 2 was shifted over to the region, the province spent the money on upgrading that road. Claringlon Councillor Larry Hannah added that "to take over a road in this condition is absolutely nuts." Scugog Mayor Howard Hall noted the road really needs to be upgraded to current standards since "it is a regional road, and there have been seven fatalities over five years." The councillors received a report on the matter for information. No other action was taken. Council Chamber Gets New Look The Durham Regional Council Chamber, located in the regional headquarters on Rossland Road, Whitby, has undergone a $300,000 facelift over the summer months. The walls have been painted silver grey, new double double blinds were added, new councillors' chairs were brought in and there are lights everywhere. The councillors.have a new microphone system, and plug-ins for laptop computers. There is also a screen that comes down from the ceiling at the front of the chamber for presentations, and it is hooked up to audio-visual equipment at the speakers' podium. There's new blue carpet and a decorative feature of the ceiling is a list of all the eight local municipalities municipalities making up the Durham Region. On Wednesday morning, during the first back-to-business meeting of regional council after the summer councillors were informed: "This room is now 98 per cent complete. Over the next couple of weeks we'll be finishing." He noted that due to the need to remove some asbestos insulation, the Durham Region went overbudget overbudget in its construction. Ajax Receives ISO 9000 Designation Ajax Mayor Steve Parrish announced on Wednesday, Sept. 10, that the municipality became the first community in Canada and the second in North America to be given a ISO 9000 award. Regional Chair Jim Witty, the former mayor of Ajax, said: "I congratulate your staff on this accomplishment." accomplishment." The money was deposited prior to shooting (scenes fbr a film in Pickering this past summjer. Dorigrie Fode, the company's Locations Manager, told, councillors on Wednesday, Sept. 10, that nonpayment nonpayment of the deposit would reflect badly on the region. "If the money is not refunded, it would have a negative impact on future productions coming to the area," Fode said. She noted that Grand Slam productions spent $35,000 on services and products in Durham Region. A report from Victor Silgailis of the Works Department states, "the production company paid all costs incurred by the region for signing the detour route and posted a $10,000 deposit for the two day closure." Pickering Councillor Rick Johnson noted the times in which the filming was to take place interrupted interrupted the traffic flow along Whites Road between Taunton Road and Concession Three. "There was disruption in the hamlet of Cherrywood from seven to nine in the morning and again at the rush hour on both mornings," Councillor Johnson recalled.
