With funding from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Community Wildlife Involvement Program (CWIP), they arc continuing to improve the biodiversity of this Provincially Significant Wetland in your "backyard". This time it's the "snake in the grass" who will benefit benefit from the effort of this active environmental group and their volunteer corp. Construction is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 27, on two snake hibernaculums. These hibcrnaculums are large pits filled with rubble and stones meant to mimic the caves and crevices that snakes commonly use to hibernate. Snakes, like other reptiles, arc cold blooded. This means their body heat is controlled controlled by the outside temperature. When the weather gets colder, they search for a suitable protected place to hibernate and sleep until spring. As we look toward improving the biodiversity of this wetland, it is important to create opportunities for those less than favourite but all important snakes. Snake counts here are low, with only the Eastern Garter Snake breeding. With improved winter habitat, we hope to attract more species and improve the population density that is currently here. Snakes arc an integral part of the food chain, with a diet consisting of frogs, fish, rodents and insects. The Friends Of Second Marsh need approximately 25 volunteers, young and old alike, to assist in the placement placement of rubble and stone in the excavated pits. Organizers recommend you wear a good pair of work gloves and work boots. Volunteers will meet at the Colonel Sam Drive trail entrance at the Partnership Sign; 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Please RSVP Friends of Second Marsh 905-723- 5047 to register. Ontario Hyundai, the largest Hyundai dealer in Durham Region, will be moving this fall.
