In a recent letter to The Canadian Statesman and The Independent, lie describes his progress as he leaves Des Moines, Iowa, and heads for Denver on the second leg of his trip. Finally after a long rest and recovery session I ant back on the road again. The weather is still in the high 80's and low 90's with very high humidity but already snow has been reported in some of the higher mountain ranges up ahead so I am anxious anxious to get going and beat the winter weather. My bike is loaded but several several items have been left behind in Des Moines. However it feels as if 1 only left the lightest items. I am now travelling on the true prairie. Here at one time . millions of buffalo grazed and grass was nearly shoulder high. My first stop is Wintcrset. Here the film "Bridges of Madison County" was made and those of you who have seen the movie will have a good idea what I sec as I pedal along the roads of southern Iowa to Nebraska. I have now reached Wintcrset by riding on one of the many bike trails which have been built on discontinued discontinued railway beds. The rails have been replaced by bike paths and makes ideal level bike trails. It is fun to ride and perfectly perfectly safe. As I continue west the fiat midwestern prairie turns into the rolling prairie with more and more hills. The Native people used this topography to their advantage by sneaking up on the herds, unseen. Surprise was part of the hunting strategy strategy since bows and arrows and spears only had a limited range. I am now travelling on one of the old Mormon Trails used in days past by Mormons on their way to Salt Lake City and other parts of Utah. It gives me a strange feeling feeling to travel on this trail and even though the road is now paved and towns have developed developed where once a lonely trading post stood, you can still get an impression of the difficulties these pioneers had to endure. Although the distance to Boulder is only 800 miles or about 1300 kms, it will take me a lot longer to cover this second leg of the journey. There are more hills and some mountains as well, the daylight hours are getting shorter and the weather more unpredictable. To make the journey more interesting I am looking for sponsors in the Clarington area. What do you think? Will 1 make it or will the weather, the topography and exhaustion exhaustion beat me? You can sponsor sponsor rite by phoning in a pledge care of the Haiti Scholarship Fund. Just phone St. John's Anglican Church, Bowmanville and let thdm know how much you are willing willing to pledge for the i second leg;, Des Moines to Boulder.
