Jr. A Eagles Open With Win Over Ajax by Brad Kelly Staff Writer When Curtis Hodgins was named coach of the Bowmanville Eagles, his first objective was to instill a "team concept" into his hockey club. It was an ingredient, that, in his opinion, was sorely lacking last year. Although one game doesn't make a season, Hodgins seems to have got his message across. In the home opener for the Provincial Jr A club on Sunday night at the Recreation Complex, the Eagles sent a capacity crowd home happy, pulling out a 4-2 victory over the Ajax Axemen. "My' number one goal this year was to work on team chemistry," said Hodgins after recording the first official win of his career as a head coach. "If the guys aren't having fun together when they come to the rink, they can't play." Sunday's victory will go a long way in establishing establishing a strong foundation for the team chemistry that the first-year head coach is trying to build. Every player contributed to the win, which was the first of the season for the team after dropping a 5-4 decision decision on Saturday to the Burlington Cougars. "It was a great team effort tonight," agreed Hodgins. "From the 10- minute mark of the first period to the end of the game, we took the play to Ajax. "That's the way we have to have it this year. It's the team that wins hockey games. For our team, all 20 guys have to contribute to the win." Charlie Bosworth, Chris Steele, Shane Norton, and Steve Blais tallied for the Eagles, who played a scoreless opening period and were tied 1-1 after 40 minutes. Two goals in less than a minute in the third period staked the Eagles to a 3-1 lead. Daryl Whitlock's second goal of the game with only 41 seconds left pulled Ajax to within one goal. But Blais ended the night's scoring when he beat Ajax's Bryon Pandovski with only 12 seconds left in the game. The Eagles will receive .a much stiffer test this Sunday night when they host Kingston at the Recreation Complex. Game time is 6:45 p.m. COVER UP - Ajax Axemen goaltendcr Bryon Pandovski covers up a loose puck before Bowmanville Eagle forward Jay Cannings (#19) arrives for a rebound during Sunday night's Provincial Jr. A home opener at the Recreation Complex. Three goals in the third period lifted Bowmanville to an impressive 4-2 victory. Charlie Bosworth, Chris Steele, Shane Norton, and Steve Blais scored for the.hometown Eagles. Kingston Hands Oshawa Generals 8-7 Setback by Jennifer Herr Staff Writer Lube, oil and filter, rotate tires, inspect brakes, check wipers, check coolant, inspect batteiy and electrical system, top up fluids, 15 point inspection. While the Oshawa Generals' home opener Sunday night may have quieted those doubting the young team's goal-scoring ability, it did nothing to dispel fears that it may have a tough time winning games. The Gens blew a healthy three-goal lead after the first period to lose 8-7 to the Kingston Frontenacs. Brent Gauvrea'u led Oshawa with a hat trick, while Donny Vernon had a pair. Peter Hogan and Kevin Colley each added a marker marker in the losing cause. Malt Bradley, with three, Rob Mailloux, Chris Allen, Mike Oliveira, Mike Laceby and Aaron Franscn scored for the winners. Rookie coach John Goodwin was more than a little disappointed with the Generals' play. After winning winning the Ontario Hockey League title last season, the team has lost a considerable considerable amount of goalscoring goalscoring talent, and is relying relying on numerous first-year players to get the job done. In a game marked by roughness, Goodwin says his team failed to keep Kingston under control. control. "They're a high-scoring high-scoring team. They have sonic key players you have to watch and we didn't do that," he said in a post- game interview, But Goodwin doesn't think his team's dismal 0- 2 record so far this season is necessarily a sign of things to come. "Hopefully, some of the guys will step their game up a little, especially some of our 19-year-old forwards," said Goodwin. He calls the number of goals scored by his team a "good sign". "You have to develop and work with what you've got," lie said. The Generals next home game is Tuesday, September 30, BOWMANVILLE -- ONT.
