The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, September 24, 1997 Section Two Page 3 Change in Plans The Bowmanvillc Eagles had a disappointing cancellation cancellation for the opening ceremonies of their home opener at the Recreation Complex on Sunday night. Legendary jockey Sandy Hawley was to have been the guest of honour, hut cancelled out at the last minute due to an illness. The Oshawa resident has been a top winner among North American jockeys four times (1970, *72,'73, '76), and became the first jockey to win more than 500 races in a single season in 1974, breaking the record of the legendary Bill Shoemaker. The 48-year-old Hawley also has four Queen's Plate victories to his credit, and is a member of Canada's Horse Racing Hall of Fame, the National Museum and Racing Hall of Fame at Saratoga, N.Y., and the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame. He was replaced by former NHL'cr Hoxvic Menard, who handled the official puck dropping to kick off the team's third season at the Provincial Jr. A level. WANNA BET? -- If your Sunday morning habits include playing a little Pro Line (the provincial sports lottery wagering game), keep an eye on this weekend's Toronto newspapers for an advertisement from Cash Pomcr, one of the many handicappcrs who earns a living living from making the odd sports wager. After losing in Week #3, he vowed that if he lost again this week, he would offer next week's picks absolutely free. After listening to his radio show on Sunday morning on the FAN 590, I would offer a little bet that the "Cashman" suffered another losing week, based on the suggestions he gave to listeners. It's a sale bet that he liked the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Oilers, both of whom got pounded on Sunday. If he is true to his word, it might be worth your while to get some inside information, for lice, from a professional professional handicapper this weekend. But beware. The guy hasn't won in a couple of weeks, so his picks might not be worth any more consideration than your own. Orthotics for Neck Pain QUESTION: Telma, I have trouble understanding how you could possibly recommend orthotics for neck pain. What do my feet have to do with my neck? This is an excellent question. People have little trouble understanding how orthotics can help with feet problems, knee problems or back problems. It Is a bit more of a stretch to understand understand how an orthotic can help with a neck problem. A patient's body In some ways is like a house. If you have a window that Is warped on the second storey storey the first thing you do Is replace that window. In the patient's case, the first thing often, done is to treat the neck. If the pain only gets somewhat better with the treatment or in a case of the house If the warped window comes back, then you need to take a further look to see if there Is a foundation problem. Maybe a crack in the foundation Is causing the walls to lean and therefore producing a warped window. It Is the same thing In a patient's case, A lot of people have come to mo after getting their neck treatod elsewhere and their neck pain has not resolved, In a computerized gait analysis their gait typically typically shows minimal heel strike. The heel strike being the first of throe phases of a formal gait, Patients with neck pain who can be helped by orth- otlcs have very little imprint of this phase. We call it decreased rear foot loading. In other words, when you look at their scan they show very little weight bearing on the heel strike phase of gait and excessive weight bearing bearing in the push-off part of the gait. The question to ask is what this has to do with one's neck. A person who tends to push-off with their toes and has a poor heel strike tends to walk more on their toes. These people will have a forward head posture and/or a forward tilting spine. The gait is reflecting that change in their feet. If you have neck pain, especially longstanding pain, orthotlcs may be a consideration for you. I would recommend that you come In and get a free computerized gait analysis. We offer a thirty day money- back guarantee with our orthotics so there Is no risk. We also provide a two year customization warranty, which means at anytime over the next two years, If your orthotics need any adjustments they will be done free of charge. The league had approximately approximately 100 players last year, and had teams for youths between the ages of seven and 13. But this year, says organizer Sherri Bonazza, the league, is expanding, with teams for children aged live to 18. Games run from November through to March each year. While the league was exclusively housed at Bowmanville High School last year, Bonazza says they may have to book another school gym to accommodate growing growing numbers. Bonazza says the indoor version of the sport is very popular, and that organizers arc seeing many players from last season season re-registering this year. "It's a lot faster, so you need quicker reflexes. It's a really fun game to watch. There's no out of bounds, except the ceiling," says Bonazza. "We had really good attendance last year, which is one sign people are enjoying it," she adds. Bonazza says organizers of the league are careful to ensure teams are balanced, with a relatively similar number of house league and competitive soccer players. "It's for fun, not extremely competitive. It's for fun and exercise in the winter," she says. Registrations are being accepted until the end of the month. The $80 fee provides provides both games and prizes for each player at the end of the year. Anyone interested in registering can call (905) 433-0678.
