We found ourselves with an early start on September 2nd, but nonetheless sve were ready for a great year. Our sports program has started with the girls' midget and junior basketball basketball teams. There seems to be great enthusiasm with the girls for a terrific season. season. Boys' soccer is headed headed for another exciting year and we hope to sec many loyal royal fans out for the games. Practices for both teams arc well on their way. Our cross country country runners arc shaping up for their first meet, Kawarlha, which takes place on October 15. The cross country team has also been asked to a number number of invitational meets and will attend some of these based on the participants' participants' interest. The first of two grade • St. Stephen's News • 12 canoe trips, left Thursday, September 11, at 5:00 a.m. for their long trek up to Algonquin Park. This trip brings senior students students together for a fun and character building weekend of canoeing and camping. The weather was perfect for such an excursion excursion and we can only hope that the second canoe trip, on September 25, will have such summer-like weather. This year, the OAC World Issues class of Mr. Morrison, got involved in the community right away. The class went pear-picking pear-picking on Wednesday, September 17, at the Van Havcrbccke's pear orchards in Newcastle. The pears picked during this excursion were then sold at school and to the community in order to raise funds for Amnesty International, which helps to protect human rights across the world and provides provides political asylum. The fundraising project raised over $200.00 for the cause and looks as though it will become a new tradition at St. Stephen's. As we annually do at St. Stephen's, we took a day to welcome our grade nine students to the school. At lunch hour all the grade nines were invited to the gym to parttakc in some fun games and hot dogs provided by O.S.A.I.D. (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving). OSAID tries to raise awareness within the school of the hazards of drinking and driving. This organization is also planning planning to distribute balloon- a-grams this month. Friends can buy each other colourful balloons to brighten their day. This year we have a new club forming at the school. The Outdoors Club is calling for people with an interest in hiking, biking, biking, camping and all other outdoor activities. We hope to sec some interesting interesting events coming from this new club for the outdoor outdoor enthusiast. The school's first liturgy liturgy was held Monday, September 15, in order to bring the whole school together for a time to gather gather our thoughts. After the liturgy, the students were given a treat of donuts and juice, organized by this year's student council as a symbol of hospitality. That same day was the kick-off for the third annual annual St. Stephen's walk-bike- a-thon. This year we arc donating part of the money raised to two local chari ties; St. Vincent De Paul and Bethesda House. These arc two great organizations organizations which do wonderful wonderful work in our community. community. The first full student council meeting was held on Thursday, September 18. All classrooms were encouraged to choose a homeroom representative to bring concerns to council council and then report to the student body about the projects going on in the school. This year we have an exceptional group of students students leading the student body and, since this is our last year at the Lambs and Concession site, we are planning to make it one to remember. There arc going to be many plans made and obstacles to overcome for the move to our new facility facility but the enthusiasm of the St. Stephen's students and staff will enable us to meet all the challenges.
