Helping him and all those involved in getting this project off the ground is Lynn Helpard, a local magazine magazine publisher. One of his publications is Plant and Garden On Tuesday, Sept. 23, I-Iclpard told The Statesman that selling olTlhe 122 acres needed at $50 per square metre is his concept. "I created the concept" and the marketing scheme, lie said. Before going to Markoff, Helpard went to Clarington Mayor Diane I-Iamre; Chief Administrative Officer Bill Stockwcll and Marketing Tourism Economic Development Officer Jennifer Cooke with his ideas. "I wanted their support" before following through with a meeting with Markoff, lie said. Helpard noted he plans on supporting the fund-raising fund-raising with a major advertising campaign through his magazines. magazines. The botanical garden, plus all the extras needed to make the location "a tourist icon" in Clarington needs to be viewed as "not just a local project but more as a GTA project." As it is, the project will cost about $1.2 million. The -land could go for about $300,000. Then, there will be the cost of further developing developing the project which is estimated at about $600,000. The remaining dollars would be used towards a year's operating cushion, Helpard said. Helpard explained that he thinks the ideas behind the botanical garden arc good. "I recognize that garden ing is the number one hobby for Canadians. About 80 per cent of Canadians garden in one way or another. "Gardening has a strong future," Helpard said. Helpard noted, it is their hope that the fund-raising campaign to be kicked off in the near future will run during during the winter months and there will be enough money to purchase the property in the spring of 1998.
