Through the sale of paper sneakers, Shopper's Drug Mart stores across Canada arc raising funds in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Canada. For $1, anyone can purchase a sneaker and sign it. Each sneaker is then displayed in the store as a show of support for the national campaign. The local store hopes to post about 2,500 sneakers on its walls before the campaign ends. AIDS Awareness Week September 29 to October 5 is AIDS Awareness .Week across Canada. Despite 15 years of scientific advances, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to spread. "The face of HIV/AIDS is changing", stales Pamela Frisby, Public Health Nurse. "Canadian women, young gay men and intravenous drug users are becoming infected at an alarming rate. Teenagers are being infected and developing AIDS in their twenties and thirties." Project X addresses one of these risk categories in Durham Region. Needle exchanges is a proven harm reduction strategy; effective at preventing Town to Look At Name HIV by decreasing needle sharing among people who inject drugs. Rabies Vaccine Drop Ministry of Natural Resources' aircraft will drop approximately 1.2 million rabies baits targeting red foxes in areas in southern Ontario to protect the public from the threat of rabies, Natural Resources Minister Chris Hodgson announced this month. The rabies vaccine will be distributed across a portion portion of southern Ontario and an area east of Ottawa beginning September 22, 1997. These baits contain a rabies vaccine. "In 1989, MNR began its baiting campaign to eliminate eliminate the Arctic fox rabies, strain from southern Ontario," said Hodgson. "Although there has been a dramatic decrease in rabies, sporadic cases still exist. This baiting operation will address these cases and keep us on course in meeting our goal of eliminating the fox strain of rabies in southern Ontario by 2001."
