Page 2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 8,1997 Heavyweight Champs Results from Orono Co-op Pumpkin Contest by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer The parking lot at the Orono Co-op looked like a giant pumpkin patch on Saturday, with gardeners from all over ClaringtOn arriving with potential prize winners in tow. The judging got underway at 12:30 with hopeful contestants contestants in both the children's and the adults' category surrounding surrounding the scale. A forklift was needed to get the heavier contestants onto the scale. The day's top trophy and $100 purse went to Dave Wyman of Courtice for his pale orange monster weighing 498 pounds. Dave, who was last year's champ too, grew the big beast in his his modest 12 foot by 14 foot suburban backyard. backyard. He actually had less space to grow his big pumpkins this year, he notes, because he reduced the size of the vegetable vegetable patch to make room for more flowers. Wyman had nothing but praise for the Orono Co-op's annual event. "This is great. The amount of enthusiasm and the amount of pumpkins here is better than at the world weight-off sites they have in the States" Don Hutton captured second place in the adult category category with his entry weighing in at 442 lbs. Ron Robinson's 293 pounder came third and Wayne and Rebecca Kennedy were close behind for a fourth place win with their 292 pound pumpkin. In the Children's category, Jason James and Jeff Middleton took the first place trophy plus $50 for their pumpkin, which tipped the scales at 228 pounds. Lakefront Plans Delayed to Oct. 14 From page 1 of the Clarington Official Plan you had recently adopted," lie staled. Duncan asked that Council look at their past actions before allowing Kaitlin further development on the south side of the same coastal road. To do so, would mean that the Council has ignored the Planning Department and the local residents, he said. "To discount all these factors in favour of a developer developer would indeed be a sad day for all of Clarington and is completely beyond understanding," lie observed. Other residents advising Council of their concerns and objections were Noel Gordon and Jack Eilbcck. Gordon said he does not understand why the Kaitlin Group would want to put in a hotel that will have more rooms in it than "the Flying Dutchman and Oshawa's Holiday Inn combined." Eilbcck told councillors there arc concerns over noise levels already coming from the marina. Over a couple of weekends during the summer, residents,as far away as Mill and Metcalf Streets were aware of the noise, he said. Mayor Hamre replied that she had heard about the noise from one local resident resident prior to mid-August and then from others later. Courtice Gets Bus Transit She added that Kaitlin lias been put on notice, "cither you obey the noise by-law or you will be charged." After voting for the reconsideration, the councillors councillors went behind closed doors lo talk with their solicitor regarding the move. Residents wishing to speak as delegations at next Tuesday's meeting have until noon today, Oct. 8, to advise the municipal clerk of their intentions. Wilmot Creek Golf Course From page 1 future Wilmot Creek Community residents two golf courses." Wilmot Creek resident Fred Ufton told Clarington councillors he is concerned over the possibility that the golf course he lives beside could be phased out and replaced with homes. He noted he paid a premium premium on his home because of its location. "I bought at Wilmot Creek and paid $10,000 to be next to the golf course," stated Ufton. Now, Ufton fears that an application by the owners to put in a nine-hole golf course on property previously previously owned by Ontario Hydro will mean that infilling infilling will take place around his property. The golf course would not be open to the public, but only to the residents of the retirement community, Rice said. The rezoning request has been referred to municipal staff for review.
