Page 6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, October 11,1997 Slo Pitch Tournament Raises Money for Cystic Fibrosis A cheque presentation was made recently to the Cystic Fibrosis Association by Bob Englcy (second from left) who organized a slo pitch tournament that was held in Bowmanvillc back in early August. Eighteen teams participated in men's recreational, recreational, and co-ed divisions. In the four years the tournament has been held, it has raised close to $10,000 for cystic fibrosis. Taking part in the presentation were Steve Anderson of the Durham Regional Umpires Membership, Karen Aronowicz who is the Durham Chapter President of Cystic Fibrosis (accepting cheque), Susan Cntcrina who is the vice president of fundraising, and Susan's daughters Sarah (13- ycars-old), and Danielle (five-years-old). Hobb Bakker Bergin Hill Clarington Major Atom by Hobb Bakker Bergin "A" Toros team sponsored Hill, continued its winning Holiday Inn Major Bantams Gain Win and Tie The Holiday Inn Major Bantam Toros earned a win and a tie in league play during the last week. On Wednesday, October 1, the Toros hosted Richmond Hill at the Darlington arena for their home opener. The game got completely out of hand as there were numerous fighting majors and game misconducts. When hockey was played the Toros came out on the winning winning end with a 5-3 victory but also will be without a few players as a result of game misconducts. On Sunday, October 5, the Holiday Inn squad travelled travelled to Belleville to complete the week's play. The Clarington squad was thoroughly outplayed, gave up four weak goals and found themselves in a 6-2 hole after two periods. The Toros must have given their heads a shake between the second and the third as they came out Hying and took it to the home town team in the third as they outscored them 4-0 and came away with a hard fought tie. The Toros gave up one goal in the first, but responded with three unanswered goals in the second period, to take a 3-1 lead. Steven Mills scored the first goal for the Toros, followed by Matt Savoie on a pass from Jeff Penon. Mills aiso got the third goal for the Toros which proved to be good enough, thanks to the splendid netminding of Steven Trudeau and Kevin Kirkwood, both of whom stopped clear-cut breakaways breakaways on the way to this victory. On October 4, the Major Atom "A" Toros suffered their first defeat of the year, losing to Sutton 4-3 at Darlington Arena. Brock Deighton scored in the first period, assists going to Adam Hobb and Kyle Myschowoda. Deighton scored again in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The third goal by Adam Shetler from Brock Deighton and Adam Hobb, put the Toros up by two goals. However, Sutton bounced back in the third period to score three unanswered goals to secure the win. McPherson Optometrist Novices Start Season with a 2-1 Victory The K. McPherson Optometrist Novices played their first game of the 97/98 season, Saturday, October 4, against TPA. Michelle Hodgson skated skated past one of TPA's defense to the net and scored her first goal, as well as the team's first goal, of the season. In the last few minutes of the first period TPA scored a goal, lying the game 1-1. Quickly in the second period a perfect pass from Carly Ncmisz to the stick of Lesley Sinopoli was shot into the TPA net, making making the game 2-1 for McPherson. In the third period, TPA came on strong trying to put the puck past McPherson's goalie, Ashlcigh Evelyn. Excellent goaltending and determined defense and forwards resulted in a great first win of the season season for K. McPherson Optometrist. McPherson's meet Crows, October 11, at 9:30 a.m. in Orono. Clarington's Atom #1 team, Optimist Club Eagles Put Undefeated Streak on Line The Bowmanvillc Eagles will put their three-game unbeaten home ice streak on the line Sunday night when, they host the Trenton Sting in a Provincial Jr. A league game. Faceoff is at 6:45 p.m. In their latest outing, Steve Blais, Ryan Jackman, Adam Armstrong, and Ryan Latimer scored in a 4-1 home ice victory over' Peterborough on Sunday, October 5. The win improved the team's record to 4-3.' Newcastle, held their season season opener at Orono Arena on Saturday, October 4. Strong goaltcnding by Ashley Weir and a determined determined defense of Suzanne McLellan, Leah Farr, The Major Pccwcc Toros team, sponsored by Ryder Logistics, arc looking forward forward to an exciting season of hockey. Their first game against SchOmbcrg resulted in a 5-2 win for the Toros. Goal scorers were Jonathan Schmidt, Garrett Dodds, Mike Kari, Justin Roussy, and Chris McDaniel. Assists came from Justin Naklicki, Chris Merringcr (2), Chris McDaniel, Mike Kari, Jonathan Schmidt and Mike Hancock. Andrew Millson arid Chris Wood were outstanding outstanding in goal. On September 29, the team drove through a violent violent thunderstorm to play a late game against Orillia. At the end of the first period, the Toros were ahead after Mike Kari scored on a rebound shot from Dale Hubbs. But the second period period started out with two goals from Orillia in the first one and a half minutes. While the Toros were short- handed, Orillia scored another three. Shots on net were four to one for Orillia and goalies Millson and Wood stopped numerous shots to end the scoring at 5- 1. A game against Slouffvillp was a wake-up call for the team. The Stouffville team outskated the Toros to win 6-1. Our lone goal was scored by Justin Roussy assisted by Chris McDaniel and Steven Hatfield. Mark Bonin gave a strong effort on offense. The following day showed a rejuvenated group of players as the Toros defeated Whitby 4-3. Toros were on the scoreboard early in the first period with a goal from Justin Naklicki assisted by Mike Kari. A few minutes later, Mike Kari scored on a pass from Ashley Ootjcrs, Candace Allen and Ashlcigh Parks, led the girls. Great offensive offensive play by Carol Anne Bruno, Amanda Ficc, Kelsey Privclt, Lindsay Sharpe, Emily Broome, Justin Naklicki. Garret Dodds made some great defensive plays and a couple couple of hard shots just missed the net. Dale Hubbs scored with the assist to Kevin Lcpinc. Andrew Millson stopped a couple of goals with amazing glove saves. Our final goal came from Chris McDaniel on a breakaway. breakaway. The Toros may have got a little too confident and Kale Thompson. The Optimist's only goal went to Amanda Ficc. Despite the odds, the girls played a steady, reliable game ending ending in a victory for Oshawa. with their lead as Whitby popped in another couple of goals in the last two minutes of the game. Peter Quon, Chris' Mcringer, Mike Hancock and Jonathan Schmidt were strong on defense, maintaining maintaining close contact with the Whitby players. Daniel Richtlcr and Adam Wilks gave some good checks and passes during the game.
