The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 15, 1997 Page 9 Happenings in Solina by Harvey Yellowlees "You can't be hurt by the words you don't say." "There is nothing wrong when starting at the bottom - unless you arc learning to stoim." It's been a lovely week, many soybeans have lost their Standing. On Monday our U.C.W. ladies had their annual annual auction sale at the church. Pat Best welcomed everyone and turned the sale over to our own Arnot Wotten, auctioneer, auctioneer, for the evening, plus his capable helpers. Many items were on the block and lively bidding proceeded until all *as sold. Rasberry pie was a popular item. The ladies took in about $1,700.00. Pat thanked everyone for coming and buying. A very interesting evening! No bowling report again this week - so I guess Courtice are on top? On Wednesday night we had a smaller crowd at Hampton card party, but had tl'good time. The results arc: High - Meta Martin, Wilma Kantor, Betty Kuyer, Muriel Butson, Art Compton. Low - Harvey Yellowlees (can't be the same one). Lone hands - Betty Kuyer. Skunks - Edith Conway and Harvey Yellowlees (again), but Edith agreed to look after the pets for the evening. Special draws - Garnet Goyne, Lloyd Broome, Alvin Spencer, Art Compton, and Betty Kuyer. Gome again. - This week Fred and Bernice Watson had their grandson Walker with' them again. He was up playing with Bailey Knox one afternoon. afternoon. 1 On Friday evening the chrd party at Solina had 10 tables and winners were: High - Ruth Gay, John Broome, Charles Langmaid and Lyle McMahon. Most Lone hands - Lyle McMahon, Low - Alden Hubbard. Special No. - Lyra Flintoff. Lucky draws - Si Trewin, Harvey Yellowlees, Ruth Gay, Lyle McMahon, Marjorie Cryderman, Fred Watson and Lois Yellowlees. Lyra Flintoff and the Wilsons served lunch. We haven't many skunks at Solina. 1 guess the lower hall at Hampton ■ attracts more, See you next week. • On Saturday it was a béautiful fall day for Bruce arid Jean Taylor's auction sale. Many, many people were there and auctioneer Arnot Wotten plus his helpers disposed of the many articles put up for.sale. My wife and., family took me to the sale and though I didn't find anything to buy, like some others, I enjoyed meeting old friends and all of the Taylor children home to help with this "farewell" to the farm. Thanks to nephew Harold for bringing me and my cart home. Lunch was served by the Eldad Board of Stewards. Thanks to all who contributed, contributed, some $1,000 was realized for the church. What Bruce and Jean have accumulated accumulated for many years has left the property. I'm sure the Taylors may miss some things. We wish Paul Svetec, the new owner of the farm, the best of everything in the future. Godfrey Gadabout, who was at the food booth, has gone to live with Roy and Blaikie Rowsell. On a lovely Thanksgiving morning we met for worship at Eldad Church. Bruce and Marion Luke were greeters and Cindy Ashton the lay reader. Betty Munro led the choir and congregation in the traditional Thanksgiving hymns. Reverend Munro spoke to the children on being thankful and his message was Thanks Giving from the Heart. A fair attendance, but room for more. Don't forget the roast beef supper on November 2nd. } Sorry to lose Frank and Bernice Hoag from our community, community, but hope to see them back often. They've only gone to an apartment in Oshawa. 'Many families had visitors for the holidays. The Bruce Taylor children were still around to celebrate Thanksgiving with their parents. parents.
