Newcastle Lions Club News The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc. October 15, 1997 Paso 13 The regular meeting of the Newcastle Lions Club was held on October 8th in the Lions Den. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President George. A delicious dinner was catered by Lion Peter and family. family. Roll Call - 30 members present present and 2 guests, Charlie Trim and Jack McOustra, both prospective members. The guest speaker was Leigh Facey-Crowthcr, Principal of Clarke High School. Leigh gave a very interesting and informative talk on Education today, and where it is going, in the future. In 1950, the work force composed of about 60% unskilled, 20% skilled, and 20% in management management or administration. In 1989, this changed to 35% unskilled, 35% skilled, and 30% management. In 1900, 95% dropped out of high school, in 1950, 75%. Today the drop out rate is about 30% on average, with about 3% in this school district. Cost of going to University is rising, and it's getting harder to get admitted. The system is trying trying to get the students to show that they arc capable, to be admitted, rather than being accepted on school marks alone. Mr. Facey- Crowthcr was introduced by Lion Paul Bennett, and thanked by Lion Howard Quinncy. Lion Terry talked on sources of information for the Lions Organization. The District A3 Directory contains all the information that is needed to run a Lions Club, ie: names, addresses and phone numbers numbers of all District Officers, Chairmen, of all Committees, current officers officers of all Clubs in the District and official visitation visitation dates of District Officers. Another useful tool is the International Directory. This Directory contains the names and addresses of all Lions Clubs in the world and their Officers. This could be invaluable to any Lion travelling travelling to distant countries. Lion John Clark was asked to give a short biography biography of himself. A musical play for anyone over the age of 5. Tickets are $5 each. Production dates are November 26, 27, 28, 29 at' 7 p.m. with a 3 p.m. matinee show on the 29th at Bowmanvillc High School. September 22, 1997 the members of the Milk Makes It Better 4-H project project gathered at the Tyrone Sunday School for their first meeting. Members are Cynthia Cochrane, President; Jody . Todd, Vice President; Kaillyn Real, Treasurer; and Jancy Knowlton as Press Reporter. Leaders arc Ann Plcasancc and Nancy Plcasancc St'urman. : We tasted different kinds of milk like I %, 2%, Homo, Skim, Skim Milk Powder, Goat's Milk, Chocolate etc. Members made and enjoyed Mexican Salad and Nachos. The ■ meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m. The second meeting was held Monday, University of Waterloo to become an Optometrist. He changed to his present profession, profession, Chiropractor, graduating in 1989. Then he went to Asia for two years to learn acupuncture. acupuncture. Not liking to live in a large city, John and his wife moved, first to Osliawa and then, settled settled in Newcastle. John will be a great asset to the community. Lion Roy Hopkins reported on the Seniors Colour Bus Tour. There were 85 Seniors. Weather, scenery was great and no complaints. Lion Jean Graham reported on the Dog Walk-a-thon, There were over 90 dogs in the walk which raised over $13,000.00 for Canine Vision. Jean thanked all the Lions for their help. Lion Stan Powell thanked the Lions who sponsored his walk, as lie raised more money this year than last. Lion Paul Bennett reported that he will be transferring to the Bracebridge Lions Club at the end of November. He and Chris arc looking forward to a new life there and we certainly wish them well. Lion Paul Bennett also asked for a volunteer volunteer to lake over the chairmanship chairmanship of the dance committee. Lion Brenton Rickard announced that the visitation committee has a schedule prepared prepared for visitations to other Lions Clubs. First official visit is on October 27th to the Maynooth Lions Club. Lion Dave Adams announced that the food bank is moving to Mill St. N. on November 1st and some help would be appreciated. Some .Lions volunteered, but more help could be used. Call Dave at 987-4832 if you can help. The next regular Newcastle Lions meeting will take place in the Lions Room at the Newcastle Community Hall on October 22. Mew Sorority Members of the newest chapter chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority sorority arc pictured above at a recent meeting where the women were encouraged to dress in a "Victorian" theme. The group pictured above is part of the newest chapter of the local sorority, known as Xi Eta Rho. Pictured (not in order of placement placement in photo) are: President Bonnie Hilliard; Elizabeth Bateman; Sonia Parfitt; Wynona Terry; Carol VanHcmmcn; Vikki McPherson; Jcrryann Hamilton. Absent from the photo is Marilyn Policy. Each of the members is holding a yellow rose which is the sorority's symbol symbol for friendship. There arc five chapters of Beta Sigma Phi in the Bowmanvillc/Newcastlc Area. The groups assist a number number of local community organizations. organizations.
