Second Marsh Seeks Volunteers Here's an exciting new occasional hobby for community community groups, educational facilities, youth, and the whole family to enjoy. The Friends of Second Marsh, is ready to begin teaching teaching people the art of water quality and habitat assessment. assessment. Two interactive, hands-on workshops are planned for the last week of September and the first week of October. This training will educate on the inter-relationships between the various parts of the environment, and particularly, particularly, on the use of macroinvertebrates (water bugs!) as an indicator of water quality. By acquiring valuable ecological data on the creeks (Harmony, Farewell and Black) which feed the Oshawa Second Marsh, volunteers will play a vital role in the identification of areas within the watershed that require attention for future rehabilitation projects. Furthermore, this information will also demonstrate the positive impacts of such restoration efforts over the long term. Have you got 2-3 hours to spare? Want to do a little outdoors stuff before the last of the good weather slips away? Then contact Paul Dobbs at the Friends of Second Marsh at (905) 723-5047 for more information. Imagine how Michelle Walker felt when she collected collected 100 times the number number of pledges her teachers suggested she aim for in her school's annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research. The 12-year-old French Immersion student at St. Stephen's School came through with $500 in pledges after knocking on pretty well every door in her hometown of Pontypool. The population of the village is 1,200. "I was determined to make $500," she said. "I wanted to do it for a good cause." Teacher Bridget Girard said staff had recommended recommended a modest goal of $5 per student for those participating participating in the October 9th marathon. It was quite a surprise when Michelle went above and beyond everyone's expectations. "I think she's carrying on Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope. She's really following following in his footsteps and making a difference for cancer research," says Girard. "Her actions'show that one person can make a difference." Approximately 235 St. Stephen's students from grades 6 to 8 participated in the school's Terry Fox marathon, choosing to run cither the 5K or 10K route around town. They managed managed to raise over $1,450 in pledges to aid cancer research. mpn •■■'/y'.-: ■■ 'T- ■'.v : £ T*1. ! mmSàêikÊSéÈÉmêêlSmSsÊlÈA. 1997 Oldemoblle Aurora nrauiii xmaui cc Roy | « Nichols Motors 2728 Courtlce Rd., and Hwy. #2 Courtlce (905) 436-2222 Toronto Line: (905) 427-4444 YEARS SpR W ' - ' ' : . . .. / v j . { x WËÊ wgBB 1 Bill !
