I The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, October 22, 1997 Page 9 Councillors Warned: Mearns Ave. Needs Crossing Guard It's time to have a crossing guard or another pedestrian safeguard at Mearns Ave. and Soper Creek Dr., says a Strathmanor Drive, Bowmanvillc, resident. resident. Diane Cary told members of Clarington's Planning Committee it takes children longer to cross Mearns Avenue than it docs an adult. With the number of children having to scoot across Mearns to get to the other side and continue their walk to school, Cary is worried someone could get hit. In documentation, documentation, which she pulled out to show councillors, Cary said "it takes 12 seconds seconds for children to cross the road." "I timed a child crossing with ' me and it took 17 seconds," seconds," she said. Cary adds that it Bowmanville Toastmasters Bowmanvillc Toastmasters journeyed to Lindsay to join that club in celebrating their 14th anniversary on the 14th of October 1997. A very imaginative,- Hallowe'en theme, Table Topics ensued. Each speaker chose a number and was called upon to describe their adventures wearing the Hallowe'en costume bearing bearing that number. Costumes ranged from Batman through pirates to men in drag. Two Toastmasters presented presented Tall Talcs. Both aroused our curiosity and those present chose Bowmanvillc-' Toastmaster Denise March's tale as the one with the more surprising ending. The public is always welcome at a Toastmaster meeting. A special meeting meeting is the Division Contest October 25, 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m'. We meet every . Tuesday, 7:30 - 9:30 at "The Darlington Information Centre". For more information please call 623-2243 or 623- 3527. probably takes children children a little longer than the 12 seconds because children "tend to dawdle." She is concerned that children who must walk to school arc faced with the fast traffic along Mearns. Currently, children from the Soper Creek subdivision subdivision which is located on the cast side of Mearns, near the zoo, cross Mearns and then take the walkways to Vincent Massey School. "If the children had to walk down Mearns and along Hwy 2, this would put them over the 1.6 kilometres prescribed prescribed by the board," she said. The walkways allow the boards to nol havc to supply busing for the children. A staff report to Clarington's municipal municipal councillors recommended recommended against the request for an adult crossing guard at the intersection of Soper Creek Drive and Mearns. "We need something something -- lines, speed bumps or a crossing guard," Cary stressed. She noted currently currently there is an adult crossing guard stationed at the traffic traffic lights at Simpson and King. Councillor Ann Dreslinski suggested Cary and area parents parents look into the idea of having a Grade five student • take on the duty of being a school crossing crossing guard. She added that when her children children walked to Orono Public School, the school and parents worked together to provide the program at their school for children walking in from the subdivision off Taunton Road. During a discus having a three-way stop, a cross walk, road markings, or possibly a blue school sign to warn motorists. The department is take her suggestions under review. sion about the report, Councillor Pat Pinglc asked that the Public Works Department further investigate other options that could'bc provided. She suggested the department examine 4-H Canadian Heritage Club The third meeting of the 4-H Canadian Heritage Club was held on October 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Archibald Orchards. The meeting started off with Mr. Archibald talking about his apple growing history. Then he moved on to discussing how they made their apple wine in their beautiful winery. But, of course, we weren't allowed any samples! We were then taken to the apple freezer room for a good look at their apple packaging. The best part of the meeting was when he showed us how they make their apple cider. And, of course, Mr. Archibald was nice enough to give us a sample of the cider. It was really great! We were then accompanied to a tour of the store. There are so many nice things in there, it was hard to leave without buying anything! If you would like to check out the next meeting meeting of the Canadian Heritage Club it will be held on October 20 at Solina Hall. We will be celebrating celebrating with a Hallowe'en parly!
