The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, October 22, 1997 Section Two Paye 3 Rupa Set to Fight '96 Olympic Gold Medallist I won't have any problem deciding what mask to wear this Halloween. I'll be the one wandering around with egg on my face. lüu^ gpti* Oh it's tough to admit a mis- WT' take. But, the more I make, the easier it seems to get. Three weeks ago in this column, column, I wrote that Bowmanvillc's Nick Rupa had signed to fight American southpaw southpaw Bronco McKart in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on October 7. At stake was McKart's IBA middleweight title. Following the scheduled dale of the fight, I placed a called to the Leisure Lady shop, in Bowmanville to speak with Nick's mom, Sherry, to find out the result of the fight. Turns out there was no fight. Before I take the blame, let me start finger-pointing. I got the information about the fight after reading an article in the Toronto Sun. And, still under the misconception misconception that everything that appears in print is gospel, I relayed that information in a column. So this is what happened: While; taking a break from training here in Bowmanville recently, Rupa received a contract from the McKart camp for the fight. Apparently, the McKart handlers felt everything was a done deal and issued a press release announcing the bout. That news release was, no doubt, where the Toronto Sun article originated. originated. With little time to prepare, and having to face a southpaw, Rupa turned down the fight. And now you start to see how everything unfolded The 31-year-old Rupa has signed to fight on November 22, in an eight-round bout against David Read, who won the only gold medal for the United States at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Behind on points in the third round, Read, 24, recorded a surprising surprising knockout. The up-and-comer, who doesn't suffer suffer from a lack of ego, calls himself the "American Dream." The fight will be held in Connecticut. How do I know all of this to be true this time? Well, the information comes from Nick's mom And, if you can't trust somebody's mom Hockin Oldtimers Donate Money Raised from Grant Flintoff Memorial Golf Tournament Thé Hockin Oldtimers hockey team made a cheque presentation to Memorial Hospital Bowmanville prior to the start of one of their games recently. They were greeted in their dressing room before the game time by Sparky the Fire Dog (the Firefighters' mascot). He put a huge smile on their faces and "fired" them up for their first win of the season. They were on the scoreboard early in the first period with a goal scored by Ryan Nicholson, assisted by Cameron Richardson and Jan Berard. Just 30 seconds later, Jan found the back of the net thanks to sonic terrific passing by Ryan and Cameron. Newcastle continued to dominate during the second period with Josh Iwanczyk scoring a beautiful goal off a pass from Kelly Palmateer and Kendall Boyd. Mariposa managed to sneak in their one and only goal of the evening past our hardworking goaltcndcr, Jordan Imray. Our final goal of the night was scored in the third, period by Ryan, assisted by Kyle Whealy and Leanne Garisto. Final score 4-1. The consistence of Aaron Fattori on defence made Jordan's job a little easier at times. The hard work and digging digging in those corners by Rikki Palmateer and Tyler Watchorn gave us fans a lot to cheer about. Congratulations kids, Wc would like to thank our sponsor, The Clarington Fire Fighters, and a special thank you to our Newcastle Volunteer Fire Fighter who arranged for Sparky to come spend the evening at our first O.M.H.A.
