On Tuesday, November 4, at the Pickering Civic Complex local businesses Coughlan Homes, Tribute Homes and The Lcnbrook Group joined forces to make a presentation to Mayor Wayne Arthurs and Louise Farr, Vice-Chair, Communications, Ajax and Pickering committee, Creating Futures Campaign. "Durham College and University Centre is enormously enormously grateful to Coughlan Homes, Tribute Homes and Lcnbrook for their outstanding donations," donations," commented Joyce Marshall, Chair, Durham College Board of Governors. "We commend Mr. Jerry Coughlan, Mr. Howard Sokolowski, Mr. Al Libfcld, and Mr. Gordon Simmonds for their visionary leadership in recognizing the importance importance of the Creating Futures goals. Pickering's Mayor B & P Club Learns About Moving On And Moving Up The Bowmanville and Professional Women's Club has rediscovered "the best kept secret in Clarington", according to Gail Rickard, Dean of the Centre for Individual Studies. The Courticc-bascd CIS supports 300 students who attend at differing limes and seek credits in the following following areas: cooperative education, business and life skills, computers, and adult basic literacy. Students can also obtain their grade 12 equivalency credentials. Gail pointed our that all students must have a secondary school level diploma today to cope and succeed in a world where many will need to change careers four times in their lives. Therefore, a commitment to lifelong lifelong learning is essential. Students at the Centre for Individual Studies range in age from 15 to 90 years. The CIS offers full classes and self-directed studies. The staff of approximately nine people work in partnership with the students. Teachers help students, students helping other students, and students help teachers. Two graduating students, Pat Lake, now a published author, and Renee Bruce, currently studying Science at the University of Toronto, gave glowing testimonials of the program and staff at CIS. The theme of moving on and moving up continues at the November meeting with guest Siri Brown, of the Intercede Diversion Program. Siri will speak to this pre-charge diversion program for first-time offenders. The 'penalties' these individuals serve help the move on by giving back to society and move up by reducing .the probability of repeating misdemeanours. The kid-sized village has been teaching children how to stay safe on the streets for the past three years. Fiddling for Kids Mark Sullivan, Canada's current 18-and- under fiddle champion, performs in a variety show at the Metro East Trade Centre flea market in Pickering on Sunday, November 23. The 15-year-old fiddler from Bowmanville is scheduled to take the stage along with thrccichampion step dancers at 11 a.m. Sullivan is one of several several entertainers involved in this fund-raiser for the Hospital for Sick Children.
