Belated happy birthday to Mr. Hugh Stapleton, who last Saturday, December 6, celebrated his SOth birthday, birthday, with a large party, held in his honor in Ncwtonvillc Grist Mill. Crowds from far and near brought greetings, gifts and cards. Mr. and Mrs. Carmen Cornish, Mr. Ralph Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Morton, Kendal, the 0. Congratulations to Orono United's big musical celebration, the Toronto "Messiah" Choir (75 voices) voices) in concert Saturday evening. A full house of dedicated music lovers, enjoyed every minute! Our 150th celebration. Horticulture Annual Meeting Thursday evening December 4, Orono Horticulture Society held their annual dinner and meeting, in main hall of Orono United Church. A crowd of around 80 members members and friends sat down to a very tasty pot-luck (how lucky!) dinner. Reverend Russell gave blessing, and President Carol Mostcrt read a Christmas poem and welcomed everyone, especially especially our guests. The president introduced introduced the head tabic - President Carol and Cor Mostcrt, District Director Kathleen Petries and hubby, Mr. Charles Trim, on behalf of Mayor Hamrc, Mrs. Lorna Atkins secretary, Mrs. Flo Sharpe, Treasurer and Mr. Ken Love, Assistant director. Wc wish to thank the Girl Guides and leaders who did such a wonderful job of cleaning and helping to serve too. Congratulations girls, on a job well done! Lorna Atkins gave the secretary's 1997 yearly report and it was a very successful successful year! Our thanks to Edward and Olive Millson for an excellent auditor's report. Cor Mostcrt gave a beautification report and thanked all for their help. Doreen Lowery gave show chairman's report and the following winners - Judge's Choice - Ann Anderson, Best Arrangement - Lorna Atkins, Most Points in Year - Lorna Atkins. Judge Dini Schoenmaker gave helpful remarks. Minnie Zegers introduced introduced our guests for the evening, Arnold and Jessica Mostcrt (Dr. Sherwin) who provided us with very excellent piano ducts, solos and guitar music. Really kept us all thrilled with Christmas music, and everyone joining in to the music. Isabelle gave a poem "The Real Meaning of Christmas". President Carol thanked everyone and Kathleen Petrie, district director, installed 1998 executive and congratulated the society society for another successful year! The society donated 2 large boxes of groceries and bag of hand knit mittens to the Salvation Army. Our very best wishes to one and all for the coming festive season. Heather Rebekah Bazaar The annual Christmas bazaar was held on Saturday, December 6 in I.O.O.F hall, with an excellent excellent attendance, as usual. The bake sale table, is always a favorite and sells out quickly. The candy tables arc also in great demand. Penny sale tables draw a big crowd and had a great variety of goodies. The big draw winners were as follows - Pretty framed picture - Lois Crider, Cobourg. Big bag of mixed candy - Rena Sinclair. Main draw winners - Afghan - Hand Crocheted - Jean Vanstonc, Newcastle. Very beautiful quilt - Marie Gibson, Newcastle. Be sure to get your tickets tickets on the upcoming turkey draw, from any of the members members or in the local stores. Orono and Kirby Church News Outdoor Christmas Tree - Again this year the Sunday School and the M & S Committee are erecting a Christmas Tree on the front lawn of the Orono Church. They will decorate it with white lights and are selling coloured lights for $2.00 a piece. When you buy a light wc put a card on the tree dedicated to a child, grandchild, mom, dad, sister, sister, etc. or in memory of someone and change the light bulb from white to coloured. There are envelopes in the pews to put on the collection plate. Half of the money raised will go to the M & S Fund and half to the Sunday School, either Kirby or at Orono. Please place your envelope and information on the collection plate. Christmas Flowers - Anyone wishing to donate money or poinsettias for Christmas contact Donna Scott at 983-5026. U.C.W. #1 meets on Wednesday, December 10, for a noon pot-luck lunch at Orono Church. Ladies Time Out meet on Wednesday, December 10, 12 noon for their Christmas pot-luck lunch. Gate #316 (supported by our M & S Funds) is in need of good, clean clothing clothing and bedding, blankets, sleeping bags. Items can be left in the Supply Room, #5, Lower C.E.
