The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, December 13, 1997 Page 9 , r Your Guide Tof Health, Hobbies and Entertainment Quartette in Concert in Peterborough Singing Out With Christmas Spirit Crisp, clean and clear are words that usually describe the fresh air we enjoy this time of the year. But, those words also describe the voices of the Junior Choir of Dr. Emily Stowe Public School. The youngsters performed four seasonal songs at the Courtice branch of the Clarington Public Library on Tuesday evening. With the choir is Tom Toilette, the director, who is conducting their rendition of "Winter Wonderland." ans' Christmas Festival Speaking from her home in Toronto amidst the flurry of preparations for Quartette's upcoming 3-wcek tour, Sylvia Tyson described their Christmas show. 'The first half is our regular material material - some new pieces and many old favourites; then in the second half we do selections selections from our album, "It's Christmas!" with, of course, a couple new songs from Gwen." In the year that has passed since the death of founding member Colleen Peterson, her long-time friend Gwen Swick has become a full- fledged member of the group. Quartette first performed in the summer of 1993 for a workshop, and so impressed the audience and themselves that they decided to make an album together. The unique blending of their diverse influences and talents, backgrounds and singing styles formed a musical musical mosaic that remains rich and distinctive. Christmas music, with its multitude of origins and styles, lends itself perfectly to Quartette's beautiful beautiful harmonics and unique arrangements. Quartette comes to Showplace Peterborough on Monday, December 15th. Tickets are available at the box office or by calling 742- 7469. Showtime is 8 p.m. A blustery and cold winter's winter's day didn't hamper the hardy spirits of visitors attending this year's Eighth Annual Christmas Festival at the farm. Traffic through the stable was steady and heavy for the entire three hours. Between 400-500 visitors made the annual trek to the stables to cak their votes for their favourite Christmas stall designs. j The barn 'was festooned in bright ribbon, glitter arid cedar bows, jnaking an attractive attractive decor to welcome guests to the farm. Door prizes for a [selection of children's toys ■ were drawn at intervals [throughout ; the afternoon, ■much to the delight and | excitement [Of the children, as ■ seen on thef little faces as they [collected their treasures. •There were also some lucky ticket holders for the carriage ; rides. Once again, this activity activity proved, to be one of the lafternoon highlights. v. The farm's lèading sire land gentleman Morgan stal- dion, Trillium Samson was 'hitched to the restored 1907 carriage. He travelled the [arena at a smart and lively ! trot. Six gallons of hot cider warmed the gtiests, while Imore than 250 peppermint [canes and festive wrapped chocolate and candy clusters were distributed to the children children and adults. Money raised will benefit the Equine Foundation of Canada, a registered charity devoted to equine research and veterinary scholarships, amounted to $142. Volunteers at the farm Had spent many hours labouring over the candy canes which were approximately decorated in the fashion of a horse. Their efforts were generously rewarded through this sale for the Foundation. The inaugural Moonlight Preview on Friday evening, attracted 37 visitors. They had a special treat with a behind-the-scenes look at the long preparation that goes into this event, as decorators scurried to finish their designs before midnight. Several stall creations were in hot pursuit of prizes. .In many cases, very few votes separated the ribbon winners from the rest. Some of the top favourites included Laurie Heard's entry of "A Cowboy Christmas", and Dorothy Woodwards's personal and sentimental "Christmas Memories". Judging proved once again to be extremely difficult, as people pondered their decisions. This year's Grand Champion winner was Ms. Megan Carter of Newtonvillc and her winning entry titled "A Country Christmas". Megan also was the» clear winner in the Youth Division. Final tabulation of voting results is as follows: Champion Children's Design (12 years and under) was "A Marionette Christmas" the entry of Pat Barre and her grandchildren. The Reserve Champion rosette went to the first time entry of ten year old Jessica Williams of Newcastle, In the Youth Design division (13-18 years), Megan Carter took the Championship, while Tania Brinn of Enniskillen and her entry "Christmas Music Box" won the < Reserve Championship. For the Adult Division, veteran stall designer, Ruth Bray and her "Christmas Kardz" entry won the Championship lor the fourth consecutive year. This was followed by the joint efforts of Catherine Sampson and' Dave Slainforth's entry, "Christmas in the Forest", named in honour of the forr mcr Orono Tree Nursery, The Best Theme award also went to "Christmas Kardz" with "Christmas in the Forest" coming in at a close second for the Reserve Championship. Honourable mention ribbons were given to Louise Grande of Orono, Dave Staniforth of Orono, Chris and Kathy Bugelli of Newtonvillc and Fran Williams of Mosport. The farm would like to extend a big thank you to all the contestants. A special thank you goes to the volunteers volunteers and committee members. members.
